How to manually register the device with ThinkSmart Manager portal
Description
Describes the Manual Device Registration within the Add Device process of the ThinkSmart Manager portal (https://portal.thinksmart.lenovo.com).
It is recommended to use the QR (mobile application), Activation Code or Windows Administrator Password process that are described at: How to add a device to the ThinkSmart Manager portal. If these Add Device processes are not possible, or if the processes are not successful, follow the Manual Device Registration process.
Scenarios that requires a Manual Device Registration process:
- When using the Windows Administrator Password process, a Unable to claim the device error appears during Add Device, and troubleshooting steps were completed within "Unable to claim (claiming issue) during "Add Device".
- The device is a ThinkSmart Edition Tiny M920q. The ThinkSmart Edition Tiny M920q only supports the Manual Device Registration process.
If unable to add a device, using Manual Device Registration process that is described below, contact Lenovo Support.

Solution
Windows IoT Devices
To start the Manual Device Registration process, follow these steps:
- Log in to ThinkSmart Manager (https://portal.thinksmart.lenovo.com) with your Lenovo ID.
- Click Device Manager ➙ Devices on the left navigation panel.
- Click Add Device and then click Register Manually.
- Chose an option for Installer Expiration and Maximum Usage. In this example, 90 days for up to 5000 devices was chosen. Then click Download.
- Allow time for the udc-provision.json file to be created. The file should be installed directly in the root of the C:\ drive.
- When installed, it should appear like the following:
- When udc-provison.json has been added, restart the device. After the restart, refresh the ThinkSmart Manager portal. The device should appear as Online.
Additional Information
- Lenovo recommends the manual process when:
- Adding a device using the Windows Administrator Password fails.
- Device is a ThinkSmart Edition Tiny M920q.
- Download and extract the udc-provision.json to the root of the C:\ drive, as shown above.
- The udc-provision.json can be used on many devices as needed, up to the Installer Expiration and Maximum Usage parameters that was selected.
- If another udc-provision.json is generated, this does not invalidate any previous udc-provision.json. As a result there could be two admins within your ThinkSmart Manager organization using separate udc-provision.json files that they generated independently, and both are valid.
Android Devices
An Android device follows this process:
- From the ThinkSmart Manager portal, get the udc-provision.json file.
- Add the udc-provision.json file to the device using the Factory Reset, Hardware Diagnostic, Manual Claim app.
- From the ThinkSmart Manager portal, perform a Refresh operation.
Follow these steps:
- Click Add Device and then click Register Manually.
- Choose an option for Installer Expiration and Maxium Usage. In this example, 90 days for up to 500 devices was chosen. Then click Download.
- Allow time for the udc-provision.json file to be created.
- Copy udc-provision.json file to the root folder of a flash drive.
- Insert the flash drive into a USB port of the device.
- On the ThinkSmart View Plus, access the Factory Reset, Hardware Diagnostic, Manual Claiming application by pressing and holding the Recovery button for 8 second. The Factory Reset and Hardware Diagnostic application is displayed:
- Select MANUAL CLAIMING and follow the instructions. If the USB drive has been inserted, and the USB drive has the udc-provision.json file , the MANUAL CLAIMING process is automatic. The following appears for the MANUAL CLAIMING process:
- Please make sure you have copied "udc.provision.json file" into the root folder of your flash drive and inserted it into the USB port of your device

Your device is ready to be claimed on ThinkSmart Manager portal.
Please restart your device and refresh the Devices for it appear in your organization.
- On the ThinkSmart Manager portal, select Refresh.
