Enable Game Mode
Turn on the gaming mode in Windows. For more information, see How to access the Gaming section in Windows.
Check frame rate
Some games or applications have options to check the frame rate. Try to match the refresh rate to frames per second, for example 60 Hz to 60 fps for a better gaming experience.
FPS or Frame rate is the frames per second or how many times an image is rendered each second (graphics card). The rate is how many frames are being produced. For more information, see What is FPS?
Refresh is the frequency at which an image is refreshed and updated (how often the monitor displays a new frame).
A higher rate makes the game look better, but may also be too much for older hardware.
Check refresh rate
Lower your refresh rate if you need to save battery power. A higher refresh rate rate can reduce blur when gaming. For more information, see Change the refresh rate on your monitor in Windows.
Use the following steps to adjust your monitor's refresh rate.
- Select Start and Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Display, then Advanced display settings.
- Scroll down to Refresh rate and adjust settings.
Try to match the refresh rate to frames per second, for example 60 Hz to 60 fps for a better gaming experience.
Screen resolution may also make a difference. A higher resolution may make the game look better, but may also drain the battery faster. For more information, see Change your screen resolution in Windows.
Update video card drivers
Update graphics card drivers. The graphics card is an important part of the gaming experience. For tips about updating drivers, see Popular Topics: Drivers, Drivers Update.
Remove unused programs
Remove unused programs. For more information, see How to uninstall programs properly - Windows.
Disable programs that are unnecessary in automatic startup, Change which apps run automatically at startup in Windows.
Adjust your game's settings
Many games have additional video options under options or settings and video. Turn down shadow and lighting quality if there are performance issues in the game.
Also try turning down (or off) the following:
- ambient occlusion
- reflections
- raytracing
- anti-aliasing
Improve your Wi-Fi performance
Position the wireless router away from walls and obstructions and the system should be close to the router. Your internet speed should be fast enough to avoid delays.

Manage power options
If battery life is not a concern, then adjust for best performance in the power plan. For more information, see Change the power mode for your Windows PC.
