CPU3 required sensor warning event logged during power cycle in 2 over 2 configuration (could also be CPU4) - Lenovo System x3950 x6 (6241)

Symptom

The following event log may appear after system restart in 2 over 2 configuration of Lenovo System x3950 X6:

"Sensor CPU3 Required has transitioned from normal to non-critical state."

and or

"Sensor CPU4 Required has transitioned from normal to non-critical state."

an example of the event log could be:

79 W System serviceable 0x800701072B03FFFF 12/07/2020 00:38:07.249 Sensor CPU3 Required has transitioned from normal to non-critical state.

Affected Configurations

The system may be any of the following Lenovo servers:

  • Lenovo System x3950 X6, Type 6241, any model

This tip is not software specific.

This tip is not option specific.

The system is configured with 2 CPUs per Node CPU's.

The system has the symptom described above.

Workaround

This issue is most likely caused by a system configuration error.

If there are no CPUs (compute books) in positions 3 and/or 4, of either node, then remove the optional I/O Book (2 and/or 1) as there are no CPUs that can access these I/O Books.

Additional Information

In Lenovo System x3950 X6 in 2 over 2 configuration, there are only two Compute Books (each with a CPU), installed in each node (bottom node: Compute Book 1 and 2, top node: Compute Book 5 and 6).

Optional I/O Book 2 connects to CPU3/CPU7. If it is installed, a CPU is expected behind the I/O book. As there is no CPU in Compute Book 3 and/or 7 slots, it results in the sensor CPU3 required warning. Both top and bottom nodes must not have optional I/O Book 2 installed behind CPU3/CPU7 slots in this configuration.

The same issue can occur for I/O Book 1 if CPU4/8 is not installed.

The same issue can also occur in a 3850x6 (4 way chassis), with only 2 Compute Books installed.
