Symptom

None of the Bluetooth devices, such as the wireless keyboard, wireless mouse, wireless headphones, wireless speakers, wireless phones, and wireless fitness trackers, work. Also, the location where to turn Bluetooth on or off cannot be found or is missing. For a video, see Troubleshooting Bluetooth Not Working.

Solution

A. Check if Bluetooth hardware is on your computer and enabled

Make sure your computer has the necessary hardware and that wireless is turned on. Bluetooth requires both hardware and software to work. Not all wireless networking hardware supports Bluetooth. Visit http://shopap.lenovo.com/ to check product specifications to see if the device is Bluetooth capable.

If the device has no built-in Bluetooth hardware, you may need to purchase a Bluetooth USB dongle.

Step 1: Enable Bluetooth radio

If Bluetooth is not turned on it may not show up in Control Panel or Device Manager. Enable the Bluetooth radio first.

Press the key or button to enable the wireless adapter. This key may be F8 or Fn+F5 (or F5).

How to enable Bluetooth:

Step 2: Check the Bluetooth drivers

  1. Click Start and search for Device Manager.

  2. Look for all Bluetooth listings by opening the Network Adapters category and the Bluetooth category (if available). If there are no Bluetooth listings under Network adapter and Bluetooth, proceed to step B.

  • Make sure the driver does not have a Yellow exclamation mark or Down arrow sign

    - Yellow Mark = The Bluetooth hardware is not responding or set up correctly. Updating or reinstalling Bluetooth drivers may correct this problem.
    - Down Arrow = Bluetooth is disabled. Right-click the device and select Enable to turn on Bluetooth.

B. Enable Discovery Mode

If Bluetooth is enabled on the computer, but you cannot find or connect to other Bluetooth enabled devices such as a phone or keyboard, make sure Bluetooth device discovery is enabled.

Make sure the Bluetooth on device you are pairing with either your phone, keyboard, mouse etc. is turned on as well.

  1. Select Start and Settings.

  3. Select Bluetooth & other devices.
  4. Select More Bluetooth options to find more Bluetooth settings.
  5. From the Options tab, select Allow Bluetooth device to find this computer.

  6. Click OK and try to connect to your device. If problems persist, continue to the next step.

C. Update Bluetooth Drivers

There are three methods for how to update and fix a faulty driver. Try all 3 methods.

Method 1:

  1. Click Start and type Device Manager.

  2. In Device Manager, locate the Bluetooth adapter. Right-click and select Update Driver Software.

  3. Select Search automatically for updated driver software, and then follow the rest of the steps.

Method 2:

  1. Click Start and type Device Manager.
  2. In Device Manager, locate the Bluetooth adapter. Select Uninstall.

  3. Restart the machine and Windows will automatically install the driver after log in. If Windows does not install the driver, see Method 3 and download the drivers.

  1. Visit the https://support.lenovo.com home page.
  2. Select the product at the home page first.
  3. Click Drivers & Software.

  4. Under Manual Update, click Select Drivers.
  5. Select Component "Bluetooth" and the Operating System.
  6. Download and Run the installer.

    Note: If updating to Windows 10 and the device or machine is not compatible with the Windows 10 upgrade, there will be NO Bluetooth Windows 10 drivers available.

D. Run Windows Troubleshooter

  1. Select Start.
  2. Select Settings.

  4. Select Troubleshoot.
  5. Under Find and fix other problems, select Bluetooth.
  6. Run the troubleshooter and follow instructions.

E. Perform a system restore

System restore helps revert the computer’s state to that of a previous point in time. Use this feature to restore your computer to a back date where Bluetooth is still working properly,

Personal files, such as documents, email, photos, and music files, are not changed; however, making a backup is recommended.

  1. Go to System Restore, and type system restore in the Start search box to locate it.

  2. Choose the restore point when Bluetooth is working properly.

  3. Confirm the restore point and wait for it to complete.
  4. If there are few restore points and the desired date is not available, then the Windows automatic feature performed a backup for the desired time.
