SMART DC4800 NVMe device may show PCIe Downgraded from Gen4 to Gen3 on SR670 V2 Server during AC power cycles - Lenovo ThinkSystem SR670 V2

Affected Configurations

The system is configured with one or more of the following Lenovo Options:

  • 4XB7A90581, ThinkSystem E1.S 5.9mm DC4800 7.68TB Read Intensive NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4 HS SSD
  • 4XB7A90580, ThinkSystem E1.S 5.9mm DC4800 3.84TB Read Intensive NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4 HS SSD
  • 4XB7A91177, ThinkSystem E1.S 5.9mm DC4800 3.84TB Read Intensive NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4 HS SSD v2
  • 4XB7A91178, ThinkSystem E1.S 5.9mm DC4800 7.68TB Read Intensive NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4 HS SSD v2

The system may be any of the following Lenovo servers:

  • ThinkSystem, SR670 V2 , Machine Type 7Z22
  • ThinkSystem, SR670 V2 , Machine Type 7Z23

The system is configured with at least one of the following Operating Systems:

  • OS Independent

Symptoms

The XCC logs the following message for a slot containing a SMART DC4800 NVMe device while AC power cycling a ThinkSystem 670 V2.

WARNING PCIe Link Speed has degraded from 8.0 GT/s to 5.0 GT/s in physical slot number <x> FQXSFIO0023J

Fix

This is a permanent restriction.

Workaround

It is recommended to run the SMART NVMe device in PCIe Gen3 speed. To change from Gen 4 to 3, use one of these two methods

1. Run the following OneCLI command and reboot the system. Replace NVMeBay5 with the correct slot for the device.

     OneCli config set DevicesandIOPorts.PCIeGen_NVMeBay5 Gen3

2. Make the changes through the F1 UEFI Setup under System Settings -> Devices and I/O Ports -> PCIe Gen Speed Selection ->NVMe Bay 0 -> Gen3

PCIe Gen Speed Selection

Save the changes and reboot.

Details

All SR670 V2 systems with this configuration will ship with PCIe Gen 3 mode set by manufacturing. If a system board replacement is required after a system has shipped, this change will need to be made manually.
