Lenovo ThinkSystem Storage Firmware Update Support Page

Description

Firmware is essential to the operation of a server. It controls every single hardware component found in the server – from the onboard chipset to the built-in modules, to the add-on adapters and drives, and all the way up to the entire system, including the self-contained management controller.

Updating the firmware and drives on a regular schedule is the recommended best practice for several reasons:

  • It achieves the highest-level hardware availability.
  • It enables you to proactively apply the latest bug fixes before your systems are affected by them.
  • It increases security, compatibility, and system uptime.

This document introduces the procedures used to update firmware for Lenovo Storage products. Lenovo provides a series of tools to help you update firmware. This landing page introduces these update tools and lists the relevant “How to” articles, so you have the resources you need to update firmware on your server. These tools allow you to use a GUI or CLI to update firmware versions in different scenarios.

Applicable Systems

ThinkSystem DE Series Storage, ThinkSystem DM Series Storage

Acquiring Firmware and Drivers

  1. Visit the Lenovo Data Center Support site.
  2. Click the Storage tile for Lenovo storage products.
  3. Find your server using Browse Products tiles or run a search by specifying a server model with machine type:
    Using Storage tile
    • For example, to find DE4000h, MT 7Y77:
    • Click the Storage button -> for Series, select Storage -> for Subseries, select DE4000H
      dropdown_menu
    Using search box
    • Enter keywords in the Search box: for example, DE4000H or simply type MT 7Y77. Search keywords are case-insensitive.
    • Select a storage product from the drop-down menu. For example: DE4000H - Type 7Y77.
  4. This will take you to the Product Home page of this server.
    product_home

  5. On the server's Product Home page, click Drivers & Software on the left navigation menu.
    drivers

  6. For Lenovo Storage products, it's required to enter a valid serial number with active warranty for your server to download software.
Before a valid serial number with active warranty is entered, a Padlock icon:  padlock  is displayed instead of a Download button: download.

To generate the Download button, enter a SN with active warranty in the SN textbox in the left navigation menu.
    enter_sn

  7. When a valid SN is entered and the page loading completes, the screen returns to the tile menu.
    return_to_tile

    valid_sn

  8. Select the tile for the firmware/driver that you are searching for to continue. For example: for Product Firmware, click the tile to browse all available software packages there.
    return

    download

  9. Click the Download button to initiate.  Download should start and wait for it to finish.
    download_initiated

  10. Software packages are downloaded.

ThinkSystem Storage Manager for DE Series

When you install the ThinkSystem Storage Manager software on your management station, CLI is installed to help you manage your array. By also installing the software on the host, the Host Context Agent is installed that helps the host push configuration information to the storage array controllers through the I/O path.Refer to the "Installing ThinkSystem Storage Manager" section in chapter 2 of the DE Series Hardware and Maintainance Guide for more information.

Lenovo ThinkSystem System Manager (TSM)

TSM is a Web-based management software program embedded on each controller. To access the user interface, point a browser to the controller's IP address. A setup wizard helps you get started with system configuration. From TSM, you can download the CLI package. The CLI provides a text-based method for configuring and monitoring storage arrays. It communicates via https and uses the same syntax as the CLI available in the externally installed management software package. No key is required to download the CLI.

ThinkSystem SAN Manager

SAN Manager is a Web-based software program used for managing your entire domain. From a central view, you can check the status for all newer DE Series arrays, such as the DE2000, DE4000, and DE6000. You can perform batch operations on selected storage arrays.
