Steps and instructions to fix Microsoft Teams Rooms (MTR) cannot be launched after Windows 10 IoT operating system updates - ThinkSmart Hub 500, ThinkSmart Edition Tiny M920q

Symptom

The ThinkSmart Hub 500, ThinkSmart Edition Tiny M920q device shows a black screen, and Microsoft Teams Rooms App cannot be launched.

Note: **This is a temporary solution until a Microsoft long-term solution**

The Windows IOT is updated to version 2004.

Solution

1. Use the latest RUSB (recovery USB) image to recover the system.

B. Download USB Creator Tool.

Lenovo USB Recovery Creator tool for Windows® 8 or later (e.g. Windows® 10)

C. Enter Serial to Download the Image.

D. Attach a keyboard and mouse to Device Prior to Recovery.

E. Disable secure boot in BIOS and add USB to boot sequence.

Boot to USB.

Follow on-screen instructions and proceed the recovery process.

2. Check Microsoft Teams Rooms (MTR) version. Click More on MTR UI, click Settings, and input administrator password. The App version is under About. If the version is older than 4.4.63.0, update MTR to the latest version.

You can use the following methods to update MTR.

Option A: Follow method described in below Microsoft website to update MTR to the latest version(Preferred).

Option B: Disable Windows Update and online update MTR.

1). Go to MTR settings, click Windows Settings, and sign in as Administrator.

2). Go to Windows Settings -> Update and Security -> Windows Update -> Advanced options ->Pause updates, choose 35 days later to be the end of pause date.

3) Verify the Microsoft Store Install Service service is started.

A. Log into the hub as Administrator and open Services by searching for Services.msc as shown below.

B. Launch Services.msc.

Install Service

C. Find Microsoft Store Install Service and check Startup Type. It should be Manual by default. If it is Disabled, MTR will not be able to be updated.

D. If Startup Type of Microsoft Store Install Service is Disabled, change to Manual and press the Start button.

4). Keep the system connected to the internet and allow for MTR update to the latest online version (4.6.23.0 or above). This may take longer than 1 day.

5). After MTR online updates to the latest, click resume Windows Update. Go to Settings -> Update and Security -> Windows Update. Click resume updates.

Additional Information

This is a known Microsoft issue. The current Microsoft Teams Rooms does not support Windows IoT OS version 2004 and a black screen issue occurs when App does not launch.

The operating system will be earlier than 2004 after recovering the image. MTR version 4.4.63.0 or later will prevent the operating system from updating to version 2004.
