Description

Describes how to add a device to ThinkSmart Manager using the ThinkSmart Manager portal (https://portal.thinksmart.lenovo.com).

ThinkSmart Manager Add Device

Adding a device is also known as "claiming a device". Adding a device allows you to:

  • Configure the devices advanced settings
  • Managed devices claimed by your organization
  • Monitor the devices status

The following Add device procedures are also available:

For devices entitled, when devices claimed a ThinkSmart Manager Premium License is automatically added to your organization. To assign the license to your devices, follow the ThinkSmart License Management instructions described at: Configuring devices and ThinkSmart License Management from ThinkSmart Manager portal.

Note: The ThinkSmart Edition Tiny M920q and select ThinkSmart Core models do not have the ThinkSmart Manager Service (TSMS) device client pre-loaded. Solution

Note: Before adding a device to the ThinkSmart Manager portal, create an Organization ID. To learn more, click: First time log in, and creating an Organization with the ThinkSmart Manager portal.

Determine if ThinkSmart Manager Service (TSMS) is installed:

To determine if the ThinkSmart Management Service is installed on a ThinkSmart Windows IoT device, use the following Windows registry commands:

  • UDCService: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UDCService
  • ThinkSmartManagementService: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ThinkSmartManagementService

Possible Errors during Windows OOBE:

The following errors may occur during Windows OOBE:

  • Internet Connection error: The ThinkSmart device is not connected to Internet. To solve this problem, make sure that your device has a stable Internet connection. Then, wait for a minute while your device detects the Internet connection or click Restart to restart your device.
  • Service availability error: The ThinkSmart Cloud Services are not available. You can do one of the following:
    • Click Restart. Your device will be restarted and you can see if services are available.
    • Click Skip for now. The password will not be generated automatically when service availability error occurs. You can click Skip for now to change your default password manually and claim the device.
  • Software update error: The TSMS download of update has not completed. Click Restart to restart your device and try to download the update again. You also can update your device remotely in ThinkSmart Manager portal. For more information, click: Updating ThinkSmart Manager Service (TSMS) from ThinkSmart Manager portal.

Add ThinkSmart One, Core during Windows OOBE

  1. Ensure that the Core is connected to the internet during the claiming process.
  2. During Windows OOBE, if the service is not available as shown below, refer to: Manual Device Registration process during "Add Device" - ThinkSmart Manager portal.

  3. During Windows OOBE, configure the basis Windows settings. After the settings are configured, the QR Code and Activation Code are displayed.

  4. Do one of the following steps:
    • Claim with the QR Code:
      1. In ThinkSmart mobile app, select Device ManagerAdd New Device.
      2. Select Scan QR barcode.
        Add a new device using mobile app
      3. Scan the QR code. Once scanned, the app will prompt you to go to the provided deep link in the QR code.
        • Notes: This QR code contains all the information required to add a device to ThinkSmart Manager. The mobile device scanning the QR code must have Internet access at the time of scanning.
      4. Select if you want to apply configurations from cloud.
        • Select Do not apply configuration from cloud if you configured the device locally and don’t want the default organization configurations to be applied.
        • If you want to apply the default organization configurations to the device, do not select this option.
    • Claim with the Activation Code:
      1. Log in to ThinkSmart Manager portal (https://portal.thinksmart.lenovo.com) with your Lenovo ID. ​
      2. Click Device Manager, then Devices on the left navigation panel, and then click Add Device button.

      3. Select ADD INDIVIDUALLY, and device type Core Kit. Then, click Continue.

      4. Select Machine Type and enter Serial Number. Then, click Next.

      5. Enter the Acitvation Code.

Add ThinkSmart One, Core after Windows OOBE

Before starting the steps listed below, the default administrator password sfb must be changed from the device before claiming the device. For more information, click: Using the administrator account on a ThinkSmart device or the ThinkSmart Manager portal.

  1. Download and install ThinkSmart Management Service by following: How to install the ThinkSmart Manager Service (TSMS) on devices that are not pre-loaded with TSMS.
  2. Log in to ThinkSmart Manager portal (https://portal.thinksmart.lenovo.com) with your Lenovo ID.
  3. Click Device Manager, then Devices on the left navigation panel, and then click Add Device button.

  4. Select ADD INVIDUALLY, and device type Core Kit. Then, click Continue.

  5. Select Machine Type and enter Serial Number. Then, click Next.

  6. Enter Windows Administrator Password. Observe the following rules:
    • The password cannot be blank.
    • The password cannot be the default sfb.
    • The password length must be between 8 to 60 characters

      Note: Activation Code is not available for the ThinkSmart Core without a HDMI-In port.
  7. Click Submit.

Add ThinkSmart Edition Tiny M920q after Windows OOBE

  1. Download and install ThinkSmart Management Service by following: How to install the ThinkSmart Manager Service (TSMS) on devices that are not pre-loaded with TSMS.
  2. Log in to ThinkSmart Manager portal (https://portal.thinksmart.lenovo.com) with your Lenovo ID. See Log in to ThinkSmart Manager for the first time.
  3. Click Device Manager, then Devices on the left navigation panel, and then click Add Device button.

  4. Select ADD INDIVIDUALLY, and device type TET M920q. Then, click Continue.

  5. Select Machine Type and enter Serial Number. Then, click Next.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to claim the new device.

  7. If you want to apply the local configuration instead of default organization configuration to the device, select Do not apply configuration from cloud.

Add ThinkSmart Hub during Windows OOBE

  1. Ensure that the Core is connected to the internet during the claiming process.
  2. During Windows OOBE, if the service is not available as shown below, refer to Manual Device Registration process during "Add Device" - ThinkSmart Manager portal.

      2. Click Device Manager, then Devices on the left navigation panel, and then click Add Device button.

Add ThinkSmart Hub after Windows OOBE

Add ThinkSmart View Plus during Android OOBE

  1. Ensure that the ThinkSmart View Plus is connected to the internet during the claiming process.
  2. During the Android OOBE, if the service is not available or claiming issue as shown below, refer to: Manual Device Registration process during "Add Device" - ThinkSmart Manager portal..
  3. Log in to ThinkSmart Manager portal (https://portal.thinksmart.lenovo.com) with your Lenovo ID.
  4. Do one of the following steps:
    • Claim with the QR Code:
      1. In ThinkSmart mobile app, select Device ManagerAdd New Device.
      2. Select Scan QR barcode.

      3. Scan the QR code. Once scanned, the app will prompt you to go to the provided deep link in the QR code.
