Where is the Fingerprint Software in Microsoft Windows?

Launch Fingerprint Software from Windows Settings

  1. Go to Windows Settings by right-clicking or tapping the Start button and then Settings.

How to add new users and set up Logon for multiple users

Note: Limited user privileges must be set to allow enroll fingerprints.

To enable Limited user to allow enroll fingerprints:

  1. Log in as Administrator.
  2. Launch Fingerprint Software.
  3. Authenticate with windows password.
  4. Click the Settings button.
  5. Click User Privileges.
  6. Enable Allow users to enroll fingerprints.

To add new users:

  1. Log in as user account.
  2. Start Fingerprint software.
  3. Authenticate with windows password.
  4. Click an empty finger box to enroll finger.
  5. Follow instruction to swipe your fingers across fingerprint reader in a smooth motion three times.

Skin variations for the fingerprint reader

If your hands are dry this may affect the responsiveness of the reader.

Note: Dry hands can lead to the reader not being able to detect a swipe. Additionally, excessive oils can lead to the slow down message even when you're swiping at a slow speed.

Fingerprint reader is not functioning properly

Try the following.

  • Make sure your finger is at the same angle as it was during enrollment. Even moderate changes in finger angle during swipe can cause the "Match failed" error.
  • Delete and recreate fingerprints.
  • Clear Fingerprint data from BIOS.
  • Run the Diagnostic in Lenovo Vantage.
  • Uninstall and reinstall software.

How to replace power-on passwords with your fingerprint

Note: To replace power-on passwords with your fingerprint, you must first enable this support in the Fingerprint software.

To enable power-on password replacement:

  1. Log in as administrator.
  2. Start Fingerprint Software.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click Authentication.
  5. Check Always show power-on Security Option if power-on password is not set.
  6. Check User fingerprint scan instead of power-on and hard drive passwords.
  7. Check enable single sign-on capability if you want to boot from power-on to windows without further fingerprint swipe or passwords.

To enable power-on replacement for fingerprint swipe:

  1. Start Fingerprint Software.
  2. Authenticate with password or enrolled fingerprint.
  3. Click the Power-on slot on the top of the enrolled fingerprint.
  4. Close Fingerprint settings and shut down system.
  5. On the first reboot you will be asked for your password and fingerprints. The second time you reboot it will only require your fingerprint.

Note: If you have enrolled more than one finger, the first time you use that finger to replace the Power on Password Security you will also be asked for your password.

How to replace Windows logon

Note: If the Client Security Solution is installed, this option must be set through the Policy Manager in Client Security Solution.

If you are not using the Client Security Solution with your Fingerprint Reader:

  1. Start Fingerprint Software.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Authentication Settings.
  4. Check User Fingerprint scan instead of passwords when logging into Windows.
  5. Click OK.

If you are using the Client Security Software with your Fingerprint Reader:

  1. Click Start menu, then click Control Panel (or search for Control Panel).
  2. Select System and Security.
  3. Select Lenovo's Enhanced Security.
  4. Enter your password and click OK.
  5. Click Advanced menu and select Manage security policies.
  6. Select Setting the default policy in User Actions.
  7. Select Protect with a fingerprint in Security Policy.
  8. Select Log on to Windows in User Actions.
  9. Select Use a default Security policy for this user action.
  10. Click OK.
    Note: A reboot is required for the change to take effect.

Hibernation tips

On resume from hibernation, you will have to authenticate yourself with your fingerprint when you get to the desktop, even if you have windows logon replacement enabled.

How to disable fingerprint reader

In Windows, in the settings section of the Fingerprint Control Center, uncheck Replace windows logon with fingerprint protected logon. In the Fingerprint section uncheck the Power-On Security section if the user has fingerprints enrolled there. You do not need to uninstall the software unless you wish to.

How to switch to the regular Windows logon

Note: If the Client Security Software is installed, this option must be set through the Administrator Console in the Windows Control Panel.

If you are not using the Client Security Software with your Fingerprint Reader:

  1. Start Fingerprint Software.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Authentication.
  4. Uncheck User fingerprint scan instead of password when logging into Windows
  5. Click Finish.

If you are using the Client Security Solution with your Fingerprint Reader:

Note: When Client Security Solution is installed and Windows logon policy is set in Client Security Solution, Windows logon replacement settings in Fingerprint Software will be ignored.

To start Client Security Solution:

To change Windows logon policy setting in Client Security Solution:

  1. Start Client Security Solution.
  2. Enter your password and click OK.
  3. Select the Advanced menu and select Manage security policies.
  4. Select Log on to Windows in User Actions.
  5. Select Disable Client Security logon interface in Security Policy.
  6. Click OK.
    Note: A reboot is required for the change to take effect.

What happens when you disable the fingerprint reader in BIOS?

You will have to override any fingerprint requests with a passphrase.

How to use your Fingerprint to replace passwords for applications and websites

Password replacement is for Windows applications such as Lotus Notes or websites such as Yahoo. Email is supported by Password Manager which is a component of Client Security Solution.

This can be done with the assistance of the Client Security Software. The security policy for Password Manager must be set to fingerprint authentication. See the Client Security Solution Administrator and User Guide for further details.

Do I have to be logged in as administrator to install the software?

Yes, you have to be logged on as an Administrator to install the software.

What applications can I control with the Fingerprint Reader?

When integrated with the Client Security Solution, the fingerprint reader can be used with any Password Manager aware application. Password Manager is a component of the Client Security Software. See the Client Security Solution Administrator and User Guide for further details.
