Integrated storage RESYNCs after power cycle - IBM BladeCenter S (Type 8886)
Source
RETAIN tip: H192031
Symptom
There is a possibility that a RAID-1 Array will RESYNC on a BladeCenter S power cycle.
This occurs when the BladeCenter S chassis power cycle has two SAS Connectivity Modules.
An example would be during POST (LSI splash screen). The following message would be observed:
Integrated RAID exception detected:
|
Once the Array is in a RESYNC state, a blinking Amber LED will be observed on the hard disk drives.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- BladeCenter S, type 8886, any model
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- BladeCenter Advanced Management Module, Option 25R5778
This tip is not software specific.
Solution
None.
Additional information
This is a permanent limitation.
The RESYNC could occur during a "pull-cord" case or black-out (loss of AC). In either case, the main contributor in seeing this issue is that upon power being restored, the blades will automatically power on and boot. During this time, the storage subsystem (SAS Connectivity Module and Disk Storage Module) has not been powered on. Once the blade reaches the LSI splash screen, the Disk Storage Modules would have been powered on, but only one SAS Connectivity Module would be online. During the LSI scan, it would only see half the members of the RAID-1 Array (Second SAS Connectivity Module still offline) and would label the Array as degraded. Once the second SAS Connectivity Module comes online, the other half of the Array members will become available and then start to RESYNC.
Note: During RESYNC, the Array will still be accessible. However, there will be a slight performance hit.
