How to resolve issue where multiple characters are displayed in Windows when typing with the keyboard

Symptom

Multiple characters are displayed when typing with the keyboard. For general keyboard issues, see Keyboard keys may not work.

Operating Systems

Solution

Windows 10

Use the following steps to adjust the keyboard settings.

  1. Search for and select Control Panel.
    Control Panel
  2. Set View by: to Small icons.
    View by
  3. Select Keyboard.
    Keyboard
  4. Under the Speed tab, adjust the delay (move the slider to the left).

  5. Select OK to save the changes.

Check if any foreign objects have fallen on the keyboard or if any objects are lodged in the keyboard. Shut down the PC and gently turn over to dislodge debris.

Use compressed air to clean the keyboard. Make sure to hold the canister at a 45-degree angle while pointing it at the keys. Sweep the nozzle across the keyboard and use controlled bursts of air.

Windows 11

Use the following steps to adjust the keyboard settings.
