      This package updates the BIOS (including system program and Embedded Controller program) stored in the IdeaPad computer to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

      Supported systems:
      - IdeaPad S9e, S10e
      - IdeaPad S10 with 3G(MT 4329, 4333)

      Supported Operating Systems:
      - Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition)

      - If Microsoft Windows XP Home/Professional version have been installed on your system, use the BIOS Update Utility for the BIOS update.
      - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.

      • If you update to the BIOS version 14CN47ww or later, you are not able to get back to the older BIOS versions.
      • Lid open resume system only when system entering S3 in LID close state.
      • When "Password on boot" enabled in BIOS Setup, system would ask for password input on every booting, including "Cold boot(power on)", "Warm boot(reboot)" and resuming from "Hibernate".
        The password prompt would always request for Supervisor password, however either Supervisor password or user password accepted.
      • When an HDD password is set, a system would ask for a password input on every booting, inlcuding Cold boot, Warm boot and resume from Hibernate.


      Updating the BIOS


      • If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version information section.
      • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack.
      • Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment.

      Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

      Manual Update

      This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

      [Downloading file]

      1. Click once on the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear.
      2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
      3. In the window to choose Run or Save, click Save.
      4. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click Save. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete.
        Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.

      1. Make sure to be logged on with an administrator account on the target computer.
      2. Make sure the AC adapter is firmly connected to the target computer.
      3. Locate the folder where the file was downloaded.
      4. Locate the file that was downloaded and double-click it.
      5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
      6. In the Select Destination Location window, click Next. If you would like to select a different folder, click Browse.
      7. In the Ready to Install window, click Install. All the necessary files will be extracted to the folder selected in the step 10.

      [Updating the BIOS]

      1. Make sure the checkbox next to "Install ..... now" is checked and click Finish.
      2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
      3. Select 'Update ThinkPad BIOS' and follow the instructions on the screen.
      4. After the update has been completed, the program shows a message 'Flash Update has been successfully completed...'. Follow the instructions on the screen to restart the computer.

      Finally delete the file saved in the step 4.


      Unattended Update

      This is for system administrators' use only.

      1. Refer to the Manual Update section, and download and extract the file.
      2. In the step 12 of the Installing files section, uncheck the checkbox next to "Install ..... now", and then click Finish to cancel installation.
      3. At the command line, execute WinPhlash.exe with the /S and /remote2 option.
        Example: [Path where the files were extracted]\WinPhlash BIOS.wph /S /remote2

      To view the update result, refer to the PHLASH.LOG file created at the same directory of the package.


      Initializing the BIOS

      BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:

      1. Turn off the computer.
      2. Turn on the computer.
      3. While it starts displaying "Press <F2> to Setup, <F12> to Boot Menu" in left-bottom corner, press the F2 key immediately. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
      4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
      5. Select Yes.
      6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
      7. Select Yes.
      8. Restart the computer.

      After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.


      Determining which version is installed
      1. Turn off the computer.
      2. Turn on the computer.
      3. While it starts displaying "Press <F2> to Setup, <F12> to Boot Menu" in left-bottom corner, press the F2 key immediately. The Phoenix TrustedCore(tm) Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
      4. Check the BIOS Version.
      5. Turn off the computer.

      Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the and the the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering the BIOS Setup Utility.
