Solution

  • Steps to prepare a Chromebook for storage or prolonged periods of non-use, to maximize the battery life and minimize the downtime when redeploying, place the system into “ship mode”.
  1. Charge the Chromebook battery to 80% or more.
  2. With the AC power adapter plugged in and charging, turn the Chromebook on.
  3. Press and Hold the Refresh Refresh  and Power  Power  keys/buttons at the same time.

* Press and Hold the Volume-Up and Power buttons at the same time (Duet Chromebook).

  1. Unplug the AC power adapter cable from the Chromebook. Then release the Refresh  Refresh and Power Power  keys/buttons.  (Volume-Up and Power buttons at the same time for the Duet Chromebook)

The Chromebook should shut down and remain off. The machine is now in “ship mode” and the battery is disabled.

  1. Confirm the Chromebook is in “ship mode”.  With the AC power adapter cable unplugged, press the Power  Power key/button. The machine should not power on, despite having a charged battery.

To exit “ship mode” and return the Chromebook to normal operation, plug in the AC power adapter and press the Power Power key/button.

Note: When the Chromebook is in “ship mode”, the battery is disabled. The internal clock will stop working. In order to connect to some Wi-Fi networks, the user may need to first set the system’s time to the correct time.

Do not leave Chromebooks plugged in during Storage.

Store your computers in a cool, dry environment.  Please check your systems User Manual for storage guidelines.
