How to enter Setup Utility (F1) or Boot Menu (F12) on a Microsoft Windows 8/8.1 preloaded PC

      Symptom

After shutting down the Microsoft Windows 8/8.1 PC and turning the system back on, it is not possible to enter BIOS Setup (by pressing F1) or the Boot Menu (by pressing F12).

      Affected Brands

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

      • ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, ThinkStation

      Affected Systems

      • All models with Microsoft Windows 8/8.1 preload.

      System is configured with:

      • Microsoft Windows 8/8.1.

      Operating Systems

      • Microsoft Windows 8/8.1

      Additional Information

By default, a Windows 8/8.1 shutdown is not a real shutdown. Instead, it is hybrid shutdown where contents of memory are saved to disk. This allows for a faster startup. However, turning on the PC after a hybrid shutdown does not allow for pressing F1 or F12 during startup.

      Solution

      Method 1

There are several ways to enter Setup Utility (F1) or the Boot Menu (F12) on a Microsoft Windows 8/8.1 PC as explained below:

      1. Press and hold the Power Button for few seconds to turn off your system completely. This will make the PC perform a full shutdown instead of a hybrid shutdown.
Then F1 or F12 can be pressed successfully during startup.
      2. If you press F1, it will take you to Setup Utility. Go to Startup tab -> Boot device List F12 Option and make sure is "Enabled".
      3. Then press F10 to save and exit.
      4. Press F12 button immediately as Thinkpad logo appears to enter Boot Menu. Select your drive using arrow key and press Enter.
        Or
      5. You can press F12 instead of F1, if the Boot device List is enabled before.

Note: F1 is to enter BIOS Setup and F12 is to enter Boot Menu (Contain a number of different device options to boot to, including CD, DVD, Flash or hard drives, and a LAN (network))
