      Tips for ThinkPad USB 3.0 (0A33970)

       

      Pop-up message prompts to download latest driver from DisplayLink website.
      Symptom

      Attach USB3.0 dock to system without installing driver, system prompts message to show the driver is older one, and suggest going to Display Link website to download new driver. Capture as below:

      Affected configurations

      Systems with Display Link V6.1 driver pre-load

      Solution

      Uninstall V6.1 driver first, then install the latest driver on Lenovo website or CD.

       

      Dock instability and detection issues with old version Renesas USB3.0 host driver
      Symptom

      Dock instability and detection issues may be encountered on the Huron River systems (like X1, X220, T420s, W520…), check the USB host driver version, the version is older than 2.1.32.0.

      To check the USB3.0 host driver, follow the path:

      1. Start menu
      2. Renesas Electronics
      3. USB3.0 Host Controller Driver
      4. USB3.0 Host Controller Utility.

      The driver should be upgraded to 2.1.32.0 if the version is a previous one.

      Affected configurations

      Huron River systems with Renesas USB3.0 host controller

      Solution

      Upgrade the host driver to later than 2.1.32.0.

      Procedure:

      1. Download latest USB Host controller driver from Lenovo support website
      2. Uninstall the old host controller driver first from Control Panel
      3. Install the new controller driver

      To get the system USB3.0 host driver, please go to Lenovo support and download website to search the support page for your computer. Users can click here to download the driver.

       

      Content protected media cannot playback through dock output.
      Symptom

      An error message will appear when playing a content protected media; the message may be "Playback Stopped. Copy Protection Signal is detected”, or similar.

      Affected configurations

      All systems with HDCP (High Definition Content Protection) or COPP (Certified Output Protection Protocol)

      Solution

      Playback content protected media on the notebook LCD.

      Additional information

      The ThinkPad USB3.0 Dock does not support HDCP (High Definition Content Protection) and COPP (Certified Output Protection Protocol) therefore Blue-ray playback and DVD playback are not supported.

       

       

      Doesn't support mirror mode video playback under XP
      Symptom

      Attach dock to system and set whatever output on dock mirroring with notebook LCD, playback DVD movie with video player, video may not playback successfully.

      Symptom

      In some situations, there maybe some [ ] appear around the resolution list as below show.

      The monitors with the resolution is not completely compatible with USB3.0 dock.

      This is the advanced feature of the USB3.0 dock.

      Modes in square brackets [ ] imply that these are modes not reported by the monitor, but the inferred modes from the preferred mode of the monitor, they are not guaranteed to work with the display.

       

      Microphone recording fails in some non-Lenovo brand combo jack earphone.
      Symptom

      In these failure earphones, sounds can be heard normally, but cannot record voice to system.

      Affected configurations

      The earphones designed with non U.S SPEC.

      Solution

      Change to Lenovo earphone with U.S SPEC design

      Additional information

      USB3.0 Dock audio jack is designed with U.S standard. There are at least 2x types of earphone in the market which use different design standard. One follows the U.S standard; the others are designed with non-U.S standard. The non U.S standard earphone is not supported by USB3.0 dock.

       

      Fail to set up display mode by Fn + F7
      Symptom

      The display mode configured by Fn+F7 is not supported by USB3.0 dock. If users press Fn+F7 to set up display mode, may result in unexpected display mode.

      Affected configurations

      System with TVT Presentation Director installed.

      Solution

      Use USB3.0 GUI to setup the display mode and configuration.

      Additional information

      USB3.0 Dock doesn’t support Think Vantage Tools Presentation Director.

       

      Fail to set up display mode by Win + P under Windows 7
      Symptom

      Display mode may not be setup successfully when use Win+P hotkey under Win 7.

      System with Win7 OS

      Solution

      Use USB3.0 GUI to setup the display mode and configuration

      To setup monitor layout and display mode by GUI or Window display property procedure:

      1. Click the ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock icon in the Windows notification area. A pop-up menu opens.
      2. Select ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock, and then select the video output mode as you want.
      Additional information

      Win+P hot key doesn't support the monitor number more than 2x scenario. Dock supports 2x monitors, with Notebook local LCD, there are totally 3x monitors display.

       

      Video playback window on the external monitor may freeze, or lag if web browser Hardware Acceleration is enabled
      Symptom

      Playback video with web browser, and drag the playback window to external monitor through USB3.0 dock, the playback window on the external monitor may freeze, or lag.

      Affected configurations

      Web browser with Hardware Acceleration enabled

      Solution

      Disable Hardware Acceleration feature in the web browser setting

      Additional information

      USB3.0 dock doesn’t support Hardware Acceleration when playback video with web browser

       

      ThinkPad Tablet 2 crashes and can not boot again after install ThinkPad USB3.0 dock driver
      Symptom

      System can not boot after installing ThinkPad USB3.0 dock driver onto

      Affected configurations

      ThinkPad Tablet 2

      Solution

      1. Attach USB key board to system USB port
      2. Power on the system, then press keyboard F11 key
      3. Choose the Language (e.g English) then press enter
      4. Choose your Keyboard layout (e.g. English) then press enter
      5. Choose an Option, select Troubleshot
      6. Under Troubleshot, select Advanced Options
      7. Under Advanced Options, Select System Restore
      8. Under System Restore, select Windows 8
      9. Press Next button
      10. Select system restoration point, and then press next.
      11. Press Finish
      12. Once System restore completed successfully, press Restart.

      Win7/Win8: Notebook LCD only setting is changed after restart/sleep/hibernate
      Symptom

      Set up the display mode as mirror mode or external mode. Then change the display mode to local LCD only.  Set system to sleep/hibernation or restart. After resume or restart, the local LCD display mode changes back to mirror or extend mode.

      It works as Microsoft Operation System display strategy.

       

       

      Win7/Win8: External monitor may show abnormal screen during executing rotation setting, will display normally in a few seconds (according to system configuration).
      Symptom

      Attach monitor to product display port, and perform screen rotation in product GUI in system tray. The screen on the external monitor may blink/black/ abnormally in a few seconds.

      Additional information

      Abnormal display happens when accessories product driver is setting the configuration. After setting is complete, the display works well.

       

      Win8: There may be two USB3.0 dock icons displayed on Device and Printer page with headphone attached
      Symptom

      Attach ThinkPad USB3.0 dock to notebook, and then insert a headphone to USB3.0 dock. Open Device and Printer page to check device name. Notice that there are two ThinkPad USB3.0 dock icons displayed.

      Affected configurations
      • Microsoft Windows 8
      Solution

      Removing headphone may remove the extra icon.

      Additional information

      1. Symptom does not happen when dock is attached to USB2.0 port of notebook.
      2. It is a visible icon issue that will never impact ThinkPad USB3.0 dock feature and its performance.
      3. Not all headphone insertions cause this symptom.
