|When an Intel 2100 3B wireless adapter is connected to an access point which is configured to use either channel 3 or 4 for 802.11b connections, the system may report poor signal quality, and the user may experience periodic connection problems.|
Only systems with the Intel 2100 3B wireless adapter are affected by this issue, and only 802.11b channels 3 and 4 are affected.
Test configuring your access point to use another channel. To prevent overlapping access points, a three channel system is recommended using channels 1, 6, and 11. If you use a single access point it is still recommended to use channels 1, 6, or 11 since there may be other access points configured nearby. To decide which channel is most likely the best choice you can use your wireless connection management software to search for nearby networks. You can then observe what channels are the most congested, and which ones are least congested. An example picture is provided below using version 4.x of ThinkVantage Access Connections. In this example the channel most likely to offer the best connection stability would be Channel 1, since that channel is the least congested.
Note: If you scan the environment using an 802.11b wireless card you may not be able to observe Access Points which are configured to use 802.11g. 802.11g and 802.11b share the same frequency, and can interfere with each other. It is recommended to scan the environment using an 802.11g wireless card if possible to ensure you are viewing all neighboring Access Points. The Intel 2100B adapter is an 802.11b adapter.
If you continue to have connection problems, it is recommended that you test your Access Point on another channel even if there are no Access Points competing on the channel you are currently using, or if there is more congestion on another channel. There may be other devices in the environment which are interfering with your reception on the channel you are currently using.
Other connection issues have been addressed in updated drivers for the Intel 2100 3B adapter. If the system is experiencing connection problems ensure that the latest version of the driver has been installed.
