Processor speed reported slower than expected in Windows XP - ThinkPad General

The processor speed is reported slower than expected on a ThinkPad that is running Microsoft Windows XP. This behavior occurs because most laptop computers on battery power set the processor speed to a slower speed to conserve power and to reduce the temperature of the processor.

      Affected configuration
      Any ThinkPad system with a processor capable of speed stepping and running Microsoft Windows XP. These models include the A20m, A20p, A21e, A21m, A21p, A22e, A22m, A22p, A30, A30p, A31, A31p, R30, R31, R32, R40, R40e, R50, R50e, R50p, R51, T20, T21, T22, T23, T30, T40, T40p, T41, T41p, X20, X21, X22, X23, X24, X30, X31, and X40

Intel has a utility available that will report the correct processor information.

      Additional information
Microsoft has confirmed that System Properties and System Information utilities built into the Operating System can report an incorrect CPU speed. When Microsoft Windows was designed the Operating System did not take into account the CPU's capability of automatically adjusting speed based on power mode settings and application activity. The utility is presently available from Intel at: http://www.intel.com/support/processors/tools/frequencyid/

Questions on the use of the utility should be directed to Intel for assistance.
