Set a User Hard Drive Password Prior to Using the BIOS Based Secure Erase Function on a Solid State Drive - ThinkPad

The Solid State Drive (SSD) may hang while executing Secure Erase. Because the BIOS must issue a temporary random password prior to issuing the Secure Erase command, if the system does hang during this process, the drive will be unusable after power-cycling the system.

Affected configurations

Any of the following ThinkPad systems with a supported SSD:

  • T400, T400s, T410, T410i, T410s
  • T500, T510, T510i
  • W500, W510, W700, W700ds, W701, W701ds
  • X200, X200s, X200 Tablet, X201, X201s, X201 Tablet, X300, X301

None at this time. As a work around, set a known User Password on the drive prior to starting the Secure Erase. If the Secure Erase hangs, power-cycle the system. Unlock the drive using the known password and retry the Secure Erase function.
