Windows Vista Installation Instructions - ThinkPad T400, T500 and W500

      Symptoms

Windows Vista Installation Instructions for Thinkpad T400/T500/W500 series

      Affected configurations

The following ThinkPad systems running Microsoft Windows Vista may be affected by this symptom:

      • ThinkPad T400
      • ThinkPad T500
      • ThinkPad W500
Installation of Windows Vista on Thinkpad T400, T500 and W500
      1. The Vista install disk must have SP1 slipstreamed prior to installation. The switchable graphics adapters on some Thinkpads require Vista SP1 for proper function

      2. Install Windows Vista. The document assumes a 32 bit version install. The 64 bit version of Vista requires different drivers and the folder names and executables may vary. Check the individual driver folder for readme files.

      3. Download and have available all the required device drivers, software utilities, ThinkPad applications and required Windows Vista QFE's and hotfixes. These Microsoft patches are absolutely essential to the proper functioning of the operating system and the ThinkPad computer system. A detailed list of these patches is listed later in this document. Once the individual software downloads have been extracted, all will be located in the C:\drivers folder. This entire folder can be copied to the local drive or network share or DVD for ease of driver install. For an easier install of drivers and such, the contents of the C:\SWTOOLS folder from a Windows Vista Lenovo preload can be made available. The SWTOOLS folder consists of three different folders, one for device drivers, one for applications and one for Microsoft patches. For the most current version of the device drivers and utilities, the device driver matrix is strongly suggested. The SWTOOLS folder is important because the APPS folder contains the install files for various applications. These install files are NOT available as a download from the Lenovo driver matrix webpages. Lenovo will post updates to these applications, but the initial install requires the source media. The C:\SWTOOLS\APPS folder is the location of the source media.
Installation of individual drivers from Lenovo Device Driver matrix support web pages

After the installation of Windows Vista, the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver should be installed, this driver commonly known as the SATA driver will allow for faster drive access for the remainder of the device driver install. There are some drivers that require pre-requisites to be installed prior to the actual device driver install, Video driver and Access Connections are the two notable ones.

Please check the machine specifications carefully, as all drivers are not required by all machines. Lenovo offers a wide range of custom hardware configurations, and thus some drivers should not be installed as the relevant hardware devices is not present.

      1. To install the IMSM driver run the INSTALL.CMD file from the \DRIVERS\IMSM\PREPARE folder. The Add new hardware wizard may run, if necessary, point the install wizard to the IMSM folder for additional files, and reboot when requested.
      2. The Lenovo System Interface Driver should be installed next. This driver is required for the proper function of Windows Vista specific device drivers, and is located in the \DRIVERS\WIN\SMIIF folder.
      3. The Intel Chipset drivers should be installed next, run the INFINST_AUTOL.EXE from the \INTELINF folder and reboot when requested.
      4. To install the AMT component, there are two separate installs required. The management engine and the SOL component. To install the management engine component, run SETUP.EXE from the \DRIVERS\AMT\MEI folder and then run SETUP.EXE from the \DRIVERS\AMT\SOL folder. This folder may not be present on some preloads, as there are some Lenovo ThinkPad's that do not have an AMT component. Verify in Bios under Config section that the ThinkPad has AMT technology. If AMT is not listed in bios, the two drivers installs are not required.

Install this device via device manager, update driver

Note: Care must be used when having source code for both kinds of ThinkPad video drivers, as both drivers extract to the same folder structure.

For switchable graphic machines, boot into BIOS via F1, select config -> display and set the following parameters:

      Default Primary Video Device [Internal]
Boot display device [ThinkPad LCD] *
      Graphics Device [Switchable Graphics] **
      OS detection for switchable [Enable]

ThinkPad Power Manager is required for switchable graphics to function, as Power Manager is the too by which the graphic subsystem can be manipulated.

      * Lenovo has several different versions of the Wireless Ethernet card and each card has its own install methodology. For best results, the Power Manager Driver, Hot Key utility, need to be installed prior to the specific card. After the card is installed, then Access Connections can be installed
** Specific install instructions for each of the wireless cards is listed later in this document.

Additional Lenovo Provided Applications and Utilities
