Card Reader Replacement - ThinkStation S30
- Today we are going replacing the Card Reader. This process will take about fifteen minutes and it should be easy enough for anyone to do. There are no tools required to do this.
- Before we continue we need to make sure that we are protected against electrostatic discharge or ESD. Make sure to shut down the computer and disconnect all cables and accessories from the system. For further information watch our understanding electrostatic discharge video by clicking the link in the description. Now that we’re ready, let’s get started.
- Before we can remove the computer cover we first need to assure that it is unlocked. Then we just need to press upward on the release button then lift the cover up and off of the chassis.
- To remove the front bezel we must first press outward on the three retaining clips to release them. Then we’re going to carefully swing the front bezel open like a door and remove it.
- To open the adapter card retainer we just need to press down and outward on the handle and swing it open.
- To remove the PCI card we first need to disconnect the power cable. Next we need to pull back on the adapter card retainer and lift the card slightly so that the extension will clear it. Then we’re going to reach underneath the card press inward on the retaining clip then lift the card up and out of the system.
- Before removing the card reader we must first disconnect the cable from the system board. Now we’re going to press down on the release button, slide the card reader and the cable out of the bay. Then I’m just going to remove the bracket and set it aside.
- So here we have our replacement card reader. Now I’m going to attach the bracket to the new card reader. Now we’re going to thread the cable through the hole in the chassis. Align the card reader with the bay and slide it in until it locks into place. Now we’re going to connect the cable to the system board.
- Now we’re going to place the PCI card into the chassis assuring that it is aligned with the slot and the adapter card retainer. Once those are aligned we can press down on the card until it is fully seated. Then we just need to connect the power cable.
- Now we’re going to close the adapter card retainer.
- When replacing the bezel we need to assure that the hinges on the bezel align with the holes on the chassis. Once you have those lined up you can close the front bezel like a door and apply pressure until the clips lock into place.
