High Definition Audio device still exists in Device Manager after Windows XP reinstallation

      Symptom

For notebooks configured with HDMI output interfaces, a question mark still exists for "High Definition Audio device" under "Device Manager" after installing Windows XP SP2 and all the drivers, even though the speaker works normally.

      Affected Brands

IdeaPad and Lenovo notebooks with HDMI port

      Solution

HDMI, High Definition Multimedia Interface, supports 1080p resolution, and advanced digital audio formats like DVD Audio. It also supports the transmission of digital audio in 8 channels at a rate of 96 kHz and stereo sounds at a rate of 192 kHz. Only one HDMI cable is used instead of separated video cable and audio cable. Most of the Lenovo notebooks have HDMI interfaces, and ATI, NVIDIA, Intel series display adapters support the output of HDMI audios. The installation of the display adapter driver includes the driver for HD Audio. Take the installation of ATI display adapter for example, as shown as below:

Windows XP SP2 does not have the KB888111 Patch, which means that yellow question mark will still be there for "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" in "Device Manager" if the display adapter driver is installed before the sound adapter driver. The right order of installation of the drivers, in this case, should be: main board -> audio adapter -> display adapter -> others.

For notebooks with NVIDIA display adapters

      1. Install the audio adapter driver attached to the driver of NVIDIA display adapter driver. Run "setup" in the file "Nvidia_VGA".

      2. Check "NVIDIA HD Audio Driver".

      3. Enter "Device Manager". Manually update the HDAudio driver from the path: \Nvidia_VGA\HDAudio

If this is done successfully, "NVIDIA High Definition Audio" device will appear in "Device Manager".

For notebooks with Intel integrated display adapters

      1. Install the audio adapter driver attached to the INTEL display adapter driver. Run "Setup" in the file "Intel".

      2. Enter "Device Manager". Manually update the driver from the path shown below

If this is done successfully, "Intel (R) High Definition Audio HDMI Service" will appear in "Device Manager".

For notebooks with ATI display adapters

      1. Install the audio adapter driver attached to the driver of ADI display adapter driver. Run "setup" in the file "HDAudioDrv" under "ATI".

      2. Enter "Device Manager", manually update the driver from the folder of "HDAudioDrv". If this is done successfully, below figure will appear

      Note:

This problem won't occur to Windows Vista, or Windows XP (SP3).

The file of the audio adapter driver attached to the drivers of NVIDIA and Intel graphics does not contain a program to install the driver automatically. Therefore, the audio adapter driver also needs to be installed when the driver of the graphics is reinstalled. Sometimes there may be a notice that the driver needs to be uninstalled first, then the system must be started again to install the driver.
