This tip introduces briefly how to reinstall Windows on the machines built with Rapid Drive.
This tip can be applied to the machines supporting Lenovo Rapid Drive technology.
1. What does Lenovo Rapid Drive technology do?
Combines SSD and HDD capacity together in virtual C drive. With OS and applications installed in SSD, speed up system performance.

4. How to get the RapidDrive driver package?
This driver package can be downloaded from the link:
Then double-click the downloaded .exe file, and it should extract to "C:\Drivers\RapidDrive\" automatically. Go to the path of
"C:\Drivers\RapidDrive\", you can find the driver setup file and the RapidDrive Tool, which is located in the folder of "tool".
5. Steps to reinstall Windows on the machines built with Rapid Drive technology
The over-all procedure is shown below:
(1) Step 1. Run "RapidDriveTool.exe" to separate SSD and HDD
Before reinstalling Windows, the tool of "RapidDriveTool.exe" should be run (run as administrator) in Windows or in Windows PE (if the current Windows crashed) to separate SSD and HDD.
"RapidDriveTool.exe" can be found in the folder of "Tool" in the RapidDrive package. The driver package is shown below.
(2) Step 2. Reinstall Windows
After run "RapidDriveTool.exe", restart the computer, and boot from Windows installation DVD. Select SSD disk to install Windows. The disk 0 is the SSD disk. You may need to re-create the partitions in SSD. The following screenshot is for demo only, and the partitioning may be different from yours.
Note: Boot the computer from Windows installation DVD to install Windows at the first powering-on after running "RapidDriveTool.exe". Once entering Windows, you need to run the tool again to separate disks.
(3) Step 3. Install RapidDrive to combine SSD and part of HDD
After Windows installation is finished, boot into Windows. Before installing RapidDrive, you should make sure there is an unallocated space, which will be combined into SSD to form a virtual C partition, existing at the beginning of the HDD, shown below.
Run "Setup.exe"(run as administrator) to install RapidDrive.
Reboot the computer, and the SSD and the unallocated space of HDD should be combined together to create a virtual C partition, shown below.
For now, Windows reinstallation is completed.
1) Which machine comes with RapidDrive?
A. The machine with following icon supports RapidDrive.
B. Users can buy the SSD and download the driver from Lenovo. And their machines should be ready for the RapidDrive. For example, Y460, Y560 and so on.
2) If OS (Windows 7) is installed on HDD, not SSD. What will happen?
It doesn't support RapidDrive. However, the machine can work well in this situation like a normal one with a SSD plugged without RapidDrive driver.
If RapidDrive driver is installed on this condition, it will cause "Blue Screen".
3) If installing OS on SSD without RapidDrive driver, what will happen?
The machine will have the whole SSD to be the system partition.
4) Can users uninstall RapidDrive Driver?
No, they can't.
When a new version driver is released, the old one can be replaced.
The relevant information about the driver can NOT be found in the Control Panel and Registry to prevent users from destroying the driver which will cause the crash.
5) What will happen if unplugged the SSD on the RapidDrive machine?
The operation system and drivers are located on the SSD. If unplugged, the machine is crashed.

7) Can SSD be found in the Disk Management?
No. There is a bug when checking the disk.
8) How to adjust the partitions?
For non-RapidDrive machines, some tools can be used to merge / delete / adjust the partitions, for example, "Acronis Disk Director Suite".
For RapidDrive machines, only the tool preloaded on Windows 7 is supported.
9) Which may cause the crash of the machine (relating to RapidDrive)?
A. Install OS and RapidDrive driver on HDD.
B. The HDD is replaced. Some drivers may locates on it.
C. Some files used to maintain system partition (SSD+HDD) is damaged. They can be restored with OKR.
D. The 5th primary partition was created through some tools. Only 4 primary partitions are available, so delete it using the same tool. When allocating partitions on HDD, make sure the primary ones are less than 4.
E. Master Boot Record (MBR) of HDD was damaged. MBR can be fixed with some tools.
F. SSD can not be detected.
