Description

Lenovo ThinkPad systems have changed some functions of the Function row keys on the keyboard. Check the user manual for information about a specific model. If the function keys are not working, see Function keys are not working.

Solution

Logo key

Windows logo key (figure 1 above):

Press the Windows logo key to open the Start menu. For information about using the Windows logo key with other keys, see the Help information system of the Windows operating system.

Fn key and function keys (figure 2 and 3 above):

Use the following steps to configure the Fn key and function keys in the Keyboard Properties window:

  1. Search for and select Control Panel.

  2. Change the Control Panel view from Category to Large icons or Small icons.
  3. Click Keyboard.

  4. In the Keyboard Properties window, click the Fn and function keys tab.
  5. Select the preferred options.

FN + ESC + Switch the key function between the F1–F12 function and the special function printed as an icon on each key. When the Fn Lock indicator is off, you can use the default function. The default function can be changed in the Keyboard Properties window.

Keys

F1: Mute or unmute the speakers. When the speakers are muted, the indicator on the key is on. If the sound is muted when turning off the computer, the sound will remain muted when turning on the computer. To turn on the sound, press F2 or F3.
F2: Decrease the speaker volume.
F3: Increase the speaker volume.
F4: Mute or unmute the microphones. When the microphones are muted, the indicator on the key is on.
F5: Darken the computer (LCD) display.
F6: Brighten the computer (LCD) display.

Keys

F7: Manage external displays to enable clone or extended desktop.
F8: Enable or disable the built-in wireless features.
F9: Multifunction depending on installed operating system:
– Windows 10: Open the Settings window.

F10: For Windows 10, enable or disable the built-in Bluetooth features.
F11: Open a keyboard setting page.
F12: For Windows 10, the key invokes the function defined by the user. To define or change the action for the F12 key, do the following:

  1. Open the Lenovo Settings program.
  2. Click the input icon. Input
  3. Locate the KEYBOARD: USER-DEFINED KEY section and follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setting.

On the Input page, you can also define different functions for the key combinations with F12, such as Shift + F12, Alt + F12, or Ctrl + F12.

Key combinations:

Fn + B: This key combination has the same function as the Break key on a conventional external keyboard.
Fn + K: This key combination has the same function as the ScrLK or Scroll Lock key on a conventional external keyboard.
Fn + P: This key combination has the same function as the Pause key on a conventional external keyboard.
Fn + S: This key combination has the same function as the SysRq key on a conventional external keyboard.
Fn + 4: Press Fn+4 to put the computer into Sleep mode. To wake up the computer, press any key or the power button.
Fn + Space Bar: If the computer supports keyboard backlight, press Fn + Spacebar to switch between the different keyboard backlight status (off, low, or high).
