1.0 What you will need

You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:

  • A registered copy of VMware ESX Server 4.1 Update 2
  • Supported hard disk drives. See http://www.lenovo.com/us/en/serverproven/ for the ServerProven list of supported options and part numbers for the server.
  • One blank diskette to create a BIOS code update diskette. Additional blank diskettes may be needed for firmware updates.

3.0 Preparing the hardware

4.0 Getting Started with VMware ESX Server 4.1 Update 2

4.1 IBM System x Deployment Method via the ServerGuide Scripting Toolkit in IBM ToolsCenter

The IBM ToolsCenter is a collection of server management tools to help manage your IBM System x, BladeServer and Flex environment. The ServerGuide Scripting Toolkit is one of tool that you can use to deploy software to your IBM eServer or xSeries server in a repeatable, predictable manner.

You can download ServerGuide Scripting Toolkit from the following sites to deploy VMware ESX Server 4.1 Update 2:

To install VMware ESX Server 4.1 Update 2, complete the following steps:

  1. Follow the detailed instructions in the ESX and vCenter Server Installation Guide to configure VMware ESX Server 4.1.
