Description

This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS program stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted in the document.

Installation instructions
Notes:
  • This package does not work on Windows Vista 64-bit systems. Use the BIOS Update CD for BIOS updates for Windows Vista 64-bit systems.
  • If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section.
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack.
  • If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment.

Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

Manual Update
  1. Print these instructions or display on another system.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the system.
  3. Start Windows Vista 32-bit, XP, or 2000 and logon with administrative privileges on the target system.
  4. Double-click 7fuj27us.exe to extract it to your hard drive.
    The default location is C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7fuj27us.exe
  5. For Windows Vista, click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, then click Run....
    For Windows XP and 2000, click Start, then click Run....
  6. Specify WINUPTP.EXE with the full path name where you saved the package, then click OK.
    Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7fuj27us\WINUPTP.EXE
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  8. Select Update ThinkPad BIOS and follow the instructions on the screen.
  9. After the update has been completed, the program shows a message Flash Update has been successfully completed.... Follow the instructions on the screen to restart the computer.
Unattended Update

Note: This procedure is intended only for system administrators. The BIOS is updated without any user interaction.

  • Refer to the "Manual Update" section, and download and extract the files.
  • At the command line, execute WINUPTP.EXE with the -S option. Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7fuj27us\WINUPTP -s

To view the update result, refer to the WINUPTP.log file created at the same directory of the package.

Initializing the BIOS
BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
  5. Select Yes.
  6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit.
  7. Select Yes.
  8. Restart the computer.

Notes:

  • After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.

Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program (ECP).
The BIOS Version and the and the the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering the BIOS Setup Utility.
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.

Notes:

  • (*a) This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features.
