Instructions on how to retrieve the serial number from BIOS if the label is missing or illegible - All ThinkStation, ThinkCentre and ThinkPad systems


If the serial number label is missing from the unit or illegible, the user can search the BIOS for the serial number.

Affected configurations

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

  • All ThinkStation systems
  • All ThinkCentre systems
  • All ThinkPad systems

Applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 8.1
  • Microsoft Windows 8
  • Microsoft Windows 7
  • Microsoft Windows Vista
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows Server 2003 (64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 (64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)

The user can search the BIOS for the serial number by following the steps below:

1. Click on the Start button.

The Start button for Microsoft Windows XP is shown below:

The Start button for Microsoft Windows 7 is shown below:

For Microsoft Windows 8 and 8.1, press Win + X, and then click on “Command Prompt (Admin)”.

2. Type CMD in the search bar, as shown below, and press Enter:

3. In the Command Window, as shown below, type the following command:

“wmic bios get serialnumber”

To view the system’s model-type number, follow Steps 1 and 2 above.  For Step 3, type the following command (without the quotes) and press Enter: “msinfo32”.  The machine’s model-type number will be shown on the “System Model” line in the System Summary window.
