      Black screen sometimes when playing back user created movie - ThinkStation C30, D20, S20, ThinkCentre A85, M80, M81, M91, M91p, ThinkPad T420, T520, W520

If the user creates a DVD Video using DVD Movie factory, the playback of the output in WinDVD intermittently goes black or scramble when playing it.

      Affected configurations

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

      • ThinkStation E30, D20, S20
      • ThinkCentre A85, M80, M81, M91, M91p
      • ThinkPad T420, T520, W520

      Applies to:

      • Microsoft Windows 7
      • Microsoft Windows Vista

The system is configured with the following:

      • WinDVD 10
      • NVIDIA graphics adapter

      Additional Information:

If DVD Movie Factory is used to make a DVD Video disc, WinDVD 10 can fail intermittently to play the disc. The output can suddenly go blank or show a garbled display in the video window. Playback will not stop, and audio plays normally. The video may return to normal at a video segment transition.

This failure is intermittent across plays of the same disc. The rate of fail varies from 1 in 20 to 9 in 10 on different discs. The disc may play in sequence without error, yet fail on looping any part. The disc may play without error unless a particular DVD control sequence is taken. The failure can occur at an obvious video transition, or in the middle of a video program.

The behavior varies unpredictably with different input files and how the files are laid out in the DVD Video. In general, this failure is caused by MPEG2 transport streams that have inline frame number discontinuities. Infrequently an inline splice created by DVD Movie Factory joining two video segments will trigger the problem.

The preview mode in DVD Movie Factory does not show the defect, but playback from folder on HDD does. Other software media players such as WinDVD 8, Windows Media Center, and Windows Media Player do not exhibit this failure.

Consumer electronics devices can play the same discs without any issue.

Lenovo systems with Intel or AMD graphics do not show this behavior.

None. Do not replace any hardware for this issue.

Use Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center to play any disc where problems are found.
