      Lenovo System Toolbox takes a long time to start - ThinkStation D10, D20, S10, S20, ThinkCentre A57e, M58, M58p


      When the user clicks on "Lenovo System Toolbox" in the start menu, it can take up to 1 minute or more for the application to start.

      Affected configurations

      The long start up can happen on any code signed .NET component or application. Lenovo System Toolbox (LST) is code signed to ensure that the assembly is not tampered with. When the user starts LST, the Microsoft .NET Common Language Runtime (CLR) goes through a verification process. Part of that process is to ensure that the certificate that was used to sign the application has not been revoked. Windows does this by downloading a Certificate Revocation List (CRL).

      This verification is usually very quick when the computer has an active Internet connection or isn't connected to a network at all. However, if the computer is connected to a Local Area Network (LAN), but not to the Internet, the attempts to download the CRL can take over a minute before it times out. During this period of time, no activity can be seen and it looks like LST has failed to start.

      If your computer is not connected to the Internet the user can prevent CRL checking as a workaround to this problem by disabling this option in Internet Explorer. Use the following steps to disable the CRL checking in Internet Explorer:

      1. Select Start, then Control Panel.
      2. Double-click Internet Options.
      3. Select the Advanced tab.
      4. In the Security section, uncheck the Check for publisher's certificate revocation option.

      By disabling the CRL checking using the Internet Options, you are not exposing yourself to a security threat because this check does not work when the computer is not connected to the Internet. If the computer will be connected to the Internet at a later stage, it is recommended to enable the CRL checking before connecting the computer to the Internet.
