      Supported systems

      • All ThinkPad

      Extending the battery life

The Lithium Ion battery pack for the these systems is an intelligent battery. It contains a microprocessor to monitor its capacity. Information of remaining battery capacity is passed to the system from the battery pack, and the system indicates the capacity in 1% steps from 0% to 100% with high accuracy. If the indicator appears to be incorrect, it is recommended that you cycle the battery (fully charge, then fully discharge) three times. This may occur when the battery is over charged or discharged.

To check the status of your battery:

      • For Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, consult the battery-status indicator.
      • For Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows XP, the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge in the task tray displays the percentage of battery power remaining.

The rate at which you use battery power will determine how long you can use the battery of your ThinkPad computer between charges. Because each computer user has different habits and needs, it is difficult to predict how long a battery charge will last. There are two main factors:

      • How much energy is stored in the battery when you begin to work.
      • The way you use your computer: how often you access the hard disk, how bright you make the computer display.

      Power saving modes

Power saving modes are recommended when the system is not in use. These modes can be used at anytime to conserve power without exiting applications or saving files prior to use. The following three power saving modes are provided by ThinkPad system:

Screen blank LCD is turned off.
Suspend/Standby All tasks are stopped and stored in memory. All devices except memory are turned off.
Hibernation All tasks are stopped and memory data and current status of the computer are stored on the HD, then the power is turned off.

To use Standby, Suspend or Hibernation mode, do either of following.
Screen blank Press the keyboard function key combination Fn + F3, or set the standby timer at power management at ThinkPad utility. To turn the display on again, press any key or press the TrackPoint pointing stick.
Suspend/Standby Press the keyboard function key combination Fn + F4, close LCD panel, set suspend timer at power management at ThinkPad utility, click suspend icon at battery meter. To return from standby mode, press the Fn key.
Hibernation Press the keyboard function key combination Fn + F12, click hibernation icon in battery meter, or set hibernation condition at suspend/hibernation/resume option in ThinkPad Features. To resume your session, press the power button for no more than 4 seconds.
Note: In order for hibernation to work, Hibernation must be enabled. Also, hibernation uses disk space. See your User's Guide for details.

By setting the standby or the suspend timer, the system enters standby or suspend automatically when the system is not used for the time set by the timer.

When using Hibernation, you can select from several options for Hibernation from the Suspend/Hibernation/Resume icon in ThinkPad Features. For more information on those features, consult the User's Guide.

      Other power saving tips

Decrease LCD brightness - The LCD panel assembly contains a fluorescent lamp which illuminates the LCD screen. This fluorescent lamp consumes a substantial amount of power. Therefore, decreasing LCD brightness helps preserve battery power.

Turn power off to Serial device if it is not in use. The serial port and IR can both be turned off in ThinkPad Features.

      Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management

To get the most computing time from each battery recharge, you need to conserve battery power without compromising computing power. With the Battery MaxiMiser wizard, you can adjust your power settings to give you the best balance between performance and power saving.

Note: Using the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge icon with Windows XP or Windows 2000

In Windows XP or Windows 2000, multiple users can log on to a single operating system by using different user IDs. If you use an administrator user ID, you can create your own Extended Power Scheme.

If you log on to the system with the user ID of an administrator who was registered as the default administrator when Windows XP or Windows 2000 was installed, and if you then double-click the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge icon, the following happens:

      • If you have created an Extended Power Scheme for the administrator's user ID, that scheme is displayed.
      • If you have not created an Extended Power Scheme for the administrator's user ID, the predefined scheme is displayed.

If you log on to the system with any other administrator's user ID, and double-click the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge icon, the following happens:

      • If you have created an Extended Power Scheme for the user ID, that scheme is displayed.
      • If you have not created an Extended Power Scheme for the user ID, no scheme is displayed. You can create one for this user ID. Start the Battery MaxiMiser wizard. The predefined scheme is displayed.
