Steps and instructions to resolve the issue where Windows Hello Face login uses the integrated IR camera instead of an external IR camera device after resuming from Modern Standby, suspend, or hibernate on a ThinkPad.
Symptom
The integrated camera is used for Windows Hello face recognition instead of the external camera, after system sleep, hibernation, or resume.
The external IR camera device is not immediately initialized after resuming from modern standby, normal suspend, or hibernate condition. The operating system uses the integrated camera as the immediate active device.
The following steps reproduce the issue:
- Install Windows 10 or Windows 11 on target system with Integrated IR camera.
- Attach external webcam (IR+RGB) to the system.
- Launch Windows Setting Sign-in Options. Register Password and PIN.
- Click Windows Hello Face and perform face authentication with external camera.
- Put system into Modern Standby, Sleep, or Hibernate.
- Resume the system and notice that face recognition is using the integrated camera.

Workaround
Use the integrated camera instead of the external camera. If the external camera is needed, disable the integrated camera.
Additional Information
Windows uses the immediate active camera device detected after resuming from modern standby, normal suspend, or hibernate condition. This behavior with the integrated and external cameras is a design of the specified Windows versions above.
