Note:
- Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 or later is required before installing this software on Windows XP.
- If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the software. To determine if you should update the software, refer to the Version Information section.
This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
[Downloading file]
- Click once on the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- In the window to choose Run or Save, click the Save button.
- Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click the Save button. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.
[Extracting file]
- Make sure to be logged on with administrative privileges.
- Locate the folder where the file was downloaded.
- Locate the file that was downloaded and double-click it.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- In the "Select Destination Location" window, click Next. If you would like to select a different folder, click Browse.
- In the "Ready to Install" window, click Install. All the necessary files will be extracted to the folder selected in Extracting File Step 9.
- Uncheck the checkbox next to "Install ..... now", and then click Finish to complete extraction.
Delete the file saved in step 4.
[Update or clean install for Windows 7]
- Click Start.
- Right-click Computer, then click Properties. At the left pane, click Device Manager.
- Double-click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers category.
- Double-click either of the following devices.
- Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller
- Intel(R) 5 series 4 Port SATA AHCI controller
- Click the Driver tab, then click Update Driver Software...
- Click Browse my computer for driver software.
- Click Browse..., then point to driver location specified in step 9.
- Make sure the checkbox next to "Include subfolders" is checked and click Next.
- Click Close when the installation has completed.
- Click Yes to restart the computer.
[Update install for Windows XP]
- Click Start
- Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
- Double-click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers category.
- Double-click either of the following devices.
- Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller
- Intel(R) 5 series 4 Port SATA AHCI controller
- Click Driver tab and click Update Driver.
- Select No, not this time and click Next.
- Select Install from a list or specific location and click Next.
- Select Search for the best driver in these locations and Include this location in the search.
- Click Browse, then point to driver location specified in step 9.
- Click OK.
- Click Next. The driver installation starts.
- Click Finish when the installation has completed.
- Click Close to restart the computer.
[Clean install for Windows XP]
- Attach a floppy disk drive to your computer.
- Locate the folder selected in the step 9. Example: C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM
- Copy all files to a floppy disk.
- Make sure that Serial ATA (SATA) enables AHCI mode in the target computer.
- Power on the target computer.
- Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo appears on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
- Select Config.
- Select Serial ATA (SATA).
- Make sure that AHCI is selected.
- Press the F3 key twice to exit.
- Make sure that Windows XP can be installed from the optical drive.
- Select Startup.
- Select Boot.
- In Boot Priority Order, set ATAPI CD0: xxx to the top of the list, 1.
- Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes. The computer will restart.
- Power off the target computer.
- Attach a USB floppy disk drive to the target computer.
- Insert the Windows XP SP3 CD into the optical drive, and restart the target computer.
- To install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver first, press the F6 key.
- When prompted, select S for Specify Additional Device.
- When prompted, insert the floppy disk that you created in step 14, and press Enter.
- Select Intel® 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller, and press Enter.
- To continue the installation, press Enter again. Leave the floppy disk in the drive until the next reboot; the software may need to be copied from the floppy disk again when the files are copied during setup.
- Follow the instruction to complete the Operating System installation. Delete the file saved in the step 4.
If you do not have a floppy disk drive, you can install Intel SATA Controller AHCI Driver by the following alternative procedure:
NOTE: If you select AHCI for Serial ATA (SATA) in the BIOS Setup Utility before installing Intel SATA Controller AHCI Driver, your computer will not respond; it will only display a blue screen.
- Power off the computer.
- Power on the computer.
- Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
- Select Config.
- Select Serial ATA (SATA).
- Select Compatibility.
- Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes.
- Restart the computer.
- Install Windows XP and Service Pack 3.
- Download Intel SATA Controller AHCI Driver from the Web site and extract the driver to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM.
- Go to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM\PREPARE, and double-click install.cmd.
- Power off and on the computer.
- Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
- Select Config.
- Select Serial ATA (SATA).
- Select AHCI.
- Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes. The computer will reboot and Windows XP will start.
- The Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard appears. Click No, not this time, and then click Next.
- Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and then click Next.
- Select Search for the best driver in these locations. Then select Include this location in the search:, specify the path, C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM, and click Next. The Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard appears.
- Click Finish.
- When the System Settings Change window appears, click Yes. The computer restarts.
Not supported.
To check the version of the device driver that is installed on your system, follow these instructions:
[Windows 7]
- Click Start.
- Right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
