      Troubleshooting USB issues - Desktops

      To troubleshoot USB issues, follow these steps and test the USB device after performing each one:

      1. Make sure the minimum hardware and operating system requirements of the hardware to be installed are met. Most USB 2.0 devices will adapt to the slower USB 1.x speed, however some USB 2.0 devices will not work on USB 1.x ports and will require a USB 2.0 adapter to be installed on systems that do not have a USB 2.0 port to work correctly.
      2. Remove all extension cables and switch boxes.
      3. Make sure the latest BIOS code is installed.
      4. Make sure USB is enabled in the BIOS.
        1. Power on the system, press F1 to access the System Configuration utility.
        2. Click Devices and I/O ports (or click the Device tab), then click USB.
      5. Make sure the USB controller and hub are listed in Device Manager, as well as any installed devices for the USB option.

        To open Device Manager:

        1. Go to --> right-click on Computer.
        2. Click Properties.

        3. In the Properties window, click on Device Manager.



        4. View Universal Serial Bus controllers to check for installed devices and devices with exclamation marks. An exclamation mark indicates the device is not working correctly.

      6. Try the device in all available USB ports.
        If it works in any of the other ports, the non-working ports are probably defective.Some devices, such as keyboards, have built in hubs that do not provide adequate power for some devices. Those ports may not be defective.
      7. Make sure needed power supplies are connected and working.
        Some USB devices require a separate power supply. The USB port does not provide all of the power required for the device. In some cases, adding a hub may provide a solution to power requirement issues.
      8. Remove any hubs added to the configuration to test devices one at a time.
      9. For printers, ensure there is no parallel cable attached to the printer at the same time as the USB cable.
      10. Make sure the device drivers for the option were installed according to the owners manual. Most devices require the driver to be installed prior to connecting the device, however, others require the reverse.
      11. Remove and reinstall USB drivers.
        1. Ensure all USB devices are removed from your system.
        2. In Device Manager, remove all items listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers (USB controllers, hubs, and devices).
        3. Click Action, then click Scan for hardware changes. This will redetect and reinstall the USB drivers.
          NOTE: A PS/2 keyboard and mouse are required to perform these steps.
      12. Make sure the latest chipset drivers are installed.
      13. Make sure the cabling from the system board to the front chassis mounted ports is connected.
      14. Save the current desktop settings, then restore the original settings using Configsafe (if available) or System Restore, or similar recovery utility, then reinstall the device drivers according to the device owners manual.

      Notes:

      • Windows NT 4.0 does not support USB devices.
      • The USB standard does not support extension cables or switch boxes.
