How to resolve no sound from the earphones or external speaker when using the headphone jack
Symptom
No sound from the earphones or external speaker using the headphone jack.
Note: For most audio issues, start with Fix audio or sound problems in Windows 10 or Fix microphone problems.
The system has detected the earphone or external speakers when plugged into the jack and unplugged. If the computer is connected to an HDMI or DisplayPort cable, the audio will play through speakers connected to the Monitor or TV, but there is no sound output from the headphone. More than one pair of headphones has been tested.
To fix this issue, use the following steps. If the issue is resolved, no need to proceed to the next step. If the issue still exists after trying all the steps, use contact us and Lenovo local service agents will provide further assistance.

Solution
Step One Isolate the issue
Make sure that the problem is sound not coming from the earphone or external speaker. If the problem still exists after checking the following, proceed to Step Two Completely uninstall the audio driver.
- Try the speakers or earphones with other devices or try another speaker or earphone with the PC.
- Make sure that the speakers are connected to the computer properly.
- Make sure that you plug the speakers into a power outlet or you install fresh batteries in the speakers.
- Make sure that you adjust the volume control on the speaker.
- Make sure that you adjust the volume dial on the sound card (next to where you connect the speakers to the sound card).
- Try different software with the headphones to see if the issue is with specific software.
Step Two Completely uninstall the audio driver
- Click the Search icon. Search for and open Device Manager.
- Under Device Manager, look for Sound and Gaming Controllers.
- Your Audio Device, named Conexant or Realtek, should be there.
- Right-click the audio device and select Uninstall.
- When a popup shows asking to delete the driver software, be sure to check the Delete the driver software for this device check box.
- Restart the system and check under Device Manager again. Make sure audio shows as High Definition Audio, which indicates that the installed driver is a generic driver. If not, uninstall the driver again starting from Step 3.
Once a generic driver is installed, try using your earphone and check if the problem is resolved. If not, download and install the latest audio driver from Lenovo Support Site. If the issue persists, proceed to Step Three Combo jack compatibility check.
Step Three Combo jack compatibility check
- Check if the system supports Combo jack (refer to the System's User Guide Manual, see How to find and view manuals for Lenovo products - ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, ideapad, ideacentre).
- This is a Combo jack icon on the port
. This is a single port that supports both Mic and sound in one port. The port has different connectors than the normal Audio jack.
If the system has a Combo jack port, you need to connect a Combo jack supported headphone or earphone. See if that works. If the problem still persists, click contact us and Lenovo local service agent will provide further assistance.
