Windows Media Player may stop working when dragging a playing window with Quad Display setup - ThinkStation E30, ThinkCentre M71e, M81, M91, M91p

Symptom

Play a DVD using windows Media Player with quad display system, when you drag a media playing window from the discrete video adapter to the onboard display, you may find that WMP will stop operating.

Affected configurations

The above symptom may occur on the following systems which is configure with Microsoft Windows 7 32bit and 64bit.

  • ThinkStation E30
  • ThinkCentre M71e, M81, M91, M91p

Additional Information:

The system is configured with Quad Display; Intel Series 6 Graphics.

Solution

None. Do not replace any hardware for this issue.

Limitations

In quad display configuration, graphics space is owned by individual adaptors. when you move a playback window from a display from one adaptor to another display connected to the second display adaptor, the player application needs to handle the situation where the capabilities are changing, this issue happens when the play application does not handle the change smoothly.

Workaround

User can open the play application on the target display, do not change the media playback window when using quad displays.
