Replacing the microprocessor fan assembly - ThinkCentre A70z

This section provides instructions on how to replace the microprocessor fan assembly.

Removing the microprocessor fan assembly

To remove the microprocessor fan assembly, do the following:

  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Disconnect all cables, power cords, and external options from your computer. See "Rear connectors".
  3. Place a soft, clean towel or cloth on the desk or surface. Hold the sides of your computer and gently lay it down so that the screen is against the surface and the cover is facing up.
  4. Remove the computer cover. See "Removing the computer cover".
  5. Open the system board shielding by removing the five screws (1) that secure the system board shielding to the main bracket.

  1. Disconnect the microprocessor fan assembly cables from the system board. See "System board connectors".
  2. Remove the heat sink assembly to gain access to the microprocessor fan assembly. See "Removing the microprocessor and heat sink assembly".
  3. Remove the four screws that attach the microprocessor fan assembly to the main bracket.

  1. Remove the optical drive and the rear I/O assembly to gain access to all the 11 screws that hold the LCD panel. See "Replacing the optical drive" and "Replacing the rear I/O assembly".

  1. Remove all the 11 screws that secure the main bracket to the front bezel.
  2. Remove the four screws that attach the LCD panel to the main bracket.

  1. Lift the main bracket up a little bit so that the LCD panel detaches from the main bracket, and you can gently pull out the microprocessor fan assembly cable connectors through the hole in the main bracket.

  1. Lift the microprocessor fan assembly and cables up and out of the main bracket.

Installing a microprocessor fan assembly

To install a microprocessor fan assembly, do the following:

  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Disconnect all cables, power cords, and external options from your computer. See "Rear connectors".
  3. Place a soft, clean towel or cloth on the desk or surface. Hold the sides of your computer and gently lay it down so that the screen is against the surface and the cover is facing up.
  4. Remove the computer cover. See "Removing the computer cover".
  5. Reinstall the four screws that attach the new microprocessor fan assembly to the main bracket.

  1. Lift the main bracket up so that you can route the microprocessor fan assembly cables through the hole in the main bracket. Connect the microprocessor fan assembly cables to the system board connectors.

  1. Route the microprocessor fan assembly cables so that they will not be pinched by the system board shielding.
  2. Reinstall the four screws that attach the LCD panel to the main bracket.

Install screws

  1. Reinstall all the 11 screws that secure the main bracket to the front bezel.

  1. Reinstall the optical drive. See "Replacing the optical drive"
  2. Reinstall the rear I/O assembly. See "Replacing the rear I/O assembly".
  3. Reinstall the heat sink assembly. See "Replacing the microprocessor and heat sink assembly".
  4. Close the system board shielding by installing the five screws (1) that secure the system board shielding to the main bracket.
