Replacing the power supply assembly - ThinkStation C20 (type 4262, 4263, 4264, 4265), C20x (type 4266, 4269, 4271, 4272)

This document provides instructions on how to replace the power supply assembly.

CAUTION:

Never remove the cover on a power supply or any part that has the following label attached.

Hazardous voltage, current, and energy levels are present inside any component that has this label attached. There are no serviceable parts inside these components.

The heat sink and microprocessor might be very hot. Turn off the computer and wait three to five minutes to let the computer cool before removing the computer cover.

To replace the power supply assembly, do the following:

  1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer. Then, disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer.
  2. Remove any locking device that secures the computer cover, such as a padlock or an integrated cable lock.
  3. Remove the computer cover. See "Removing the computer cover".
  4. Remove the front bezel. See "Removing and reinstalling the front bezel".
  5. Remove the PCI card holder. See "Removing and reinstalling the PCI card holder".
  6. Remove the optical drive. See "Replacing the optical drive".
  7. Pivot the optical drive bracket as shown in the following illustration and then remove it from the chassis.

  1. Position the computer upside down.
  2. Remove the three screws that secure the side cover as shown in the following illustration.

  1. Remove the other six screws that secure the side cover as shown in the following illustration. Then, lift the side cover and remove it from the computer.

  1. Disconnect the power supply assembly cables from the system board and the drives. In some models, you might need to disconnect the power supply assembly cables from the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) cards.
  2. Do the following to remove the power supply assembly from the computer:
    a. Pull the power supply assembly cables through the hole (1) in the chassis.
    b. Remove the four screws at the rear of the chassis that secure the power supply assembly.
    c. Slide the power supply assembly toward the front of the computer and then lift it out of the chassis.

  1. Install the new power supply assembly into the chassis, make sure the screw holes in the new power supply assembly align with those in the chassis.
  2. Install the four screws at the rear of the chassis to secure the new power supply assembly in place.
  3. Push the power supply assembly cables through the hole (1) that is shown in Figure 4.
  4. Route the three power supply assembly cables through the two clips on the bottom of the hard disk drive cage following the inverse numerical sequence. Then, route the cables through the other two clips on the side of the hard disk drive cage following the numerical sequence.

(1) P3 cable (connected to the rear of the optical drive)
(2) P5A/P5B cable (connected to an installed PCI card which requires power source)
(3) P4 cable (connected to an installed PCI card which requires power source)

  1. Connect the power supply assembly cables to the system board and all drives. In some models, you might need to connect the power supply assembly cables to the PCI cards.
  2. Position the side cover into place so that the screw holes in the side cover align with those in the chassis. Reinstall the nine screws to secure the side cover.
  3. Return the computer to its original position.
  4. Reinstall the optical drive bracket into the chassis.
  5. Slide the optical drive into the bracket from the front of the computer until it snaps into position. Reconnect the signal cable and the power cable to the optical drive.
  6. Reinstall the PCI card holder. See "Removing and reinstalling the PCI card holder".
  7. Reinstall the front bezel. See "Removing and reinstalling the front bezel".
  8. Reinstall the computer cover. See "Removing the computer cover".
  9. To complete the installation or replacement, go to "Completing the parts replacement".
