Keyboard removal and installation - ThinkPad R50, R50e, R50p, R51, R51e, R52

To remove the keyboard, do as follows:

  1. Turn off the system; then disconnect the ac adapter and all cables from the system. Wait for a few minutes, till the inside of the system cools, before you start the following procedures.
  2. Close the system display, and turn the system over.
  3. Remove the battery.
  4. To remove the keyboard, if you are using the system with the 14.1-inch display, remove screws (1) and (1a) . If you are using the one with the 15-inch display, remove screw (1).

    Note: Screw 1a only exists on models with the 14.1-in. LCD.
  5. Unlatch the keyboard by pushing hard with your thumb, in the direction shown by arrow, on the area marked (2) in the drawing. The keyboard will open up slightly.

  6. Pull the keyboard a little toward you (3), and then detach the connector (4).

To reinstall the keyboard, do as follows:

  1. Attach the keyboard to the connector

  2. Insert the keyboard. Make sure that the edges of the keyboard are under the frame as shown by the arrows.

  3. Press gently on the areas shown in the drawing, and slide the keyboard toward you.

  4. Make sure that the keyboard edges (B) are under the frame.

  5. Close the system display, and turn the system over. If you are using the system with the 14.1-inch display, reinstall screws (1) and (1a). If you are using the one with the 15-inch display, reinstall screw (1). To make sure that each screw is reinstalled in the correct screwhole, check it against the screw identification key next to the screwhole.
    Note: Screw 1a only exists on models with the 14.1-in. LCD.
  6. Reinstall the battery.
  7. Turn the system over again. Connect the ac adapter and cables to the system; then turn it on.
