Microsoft Windows 8 does not allow the time zone to be changed during the initial out of box experience.

Symptom

The Microsoft Windows 8 preload system will automatically be set to Pacific time zone initially.

Affected Configurations

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

  • ThinkCentre
  • ThinkStation
  • ThinkServer
  • ThinkPad
  • Idea Tablet
  • IdeaPad
  • IdeaCentre

Operating Systems

  • Microsoft Windows 8
Solution

During the initial startup and configuration of Microsoft Windows 8, the user does not have an option to change the time zone until the desktop loads for the first time.  Microsoft will allow the time zone to be set during setup in Windows 8.1.

Workaround

To change the time zone, swipe in the Charms bar, choose Settings, and then Change PC Settings.  Under PC settings, choose General and select the correct time zone in the pull down menu under Time.  Otherwise, from the Desktop, open Control Panel, click Clock, Language, and Region, and then click on Date and Time.  Click the Change time zone button and select the correct time zone for your region.
