Tips for ThinkPad Basic USB 3.0 Dock (Unclassified)

The speaker volume bar is displayed when you change the microphone volume of the dock

Symptom

The dock works correctly with your computer. Connect a microphone into the audio connector of the dock and ensure that the microphone works correctly. Right-click the speaker icon from the Windows® notification area and select Open Volume Control, the Volume Control window is displayed. Click Option -> Properties -> Lenovo USB Audio -> OK. When you move the slider to adjust the microphone volume, the speaker volume bar is displayed.

The microphone connected to the dock cannot be muted by pressing the hotkey

Symptom

Connect a microphone to the dock and ensure that the microphone works correctly with the dock. Right-click the speaker icon from the windows notification area and then select Adjust Audio Properties -> Audio -> Sound recording, and then set the default device to Lenovo USB Audio. Then, click Start -> All programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Sound Recorder to start the record. During the sound record, you press the microphone-mute button on your ThinkPad® keyboard or press Fn+F4 to mute the microphone. However, after you end the record, save the record file, and then open the file to check the record sound, you will find all the voices have been recorded, which indicates that the dock microphone has not been muted.

The speaker volume setting cannot be kept after the dock is hot-plugged or after the dock is turned off and then turned on again

Symptom

The dock works correctly with your computer. Connect a headset or a speaker to the dock, right-click the speaker icon from the Windows® notification area, select Adjust Audio Properties -> Audio -> Sound playback, and then set the default device to Lenovo USB Audio. Then, double-click the speaker icon from the Windows notification area and adjust the volume to any level other than level 9. After you turn off the dock and turn on the dock again, the volume changes back to level 9 and your last setting is lost. The same problem occurs when you disconnect the dock and re-connect the dock to the USB connector of the computer.

The dock Ethernet cannot work when the Ethernet speed is set to 1 Gbps

Symptom

The dock works correctly with your computer with driver 7.3M0 or later. Connect a 10/100M network device to the dock and then open the Device Manager and double-click Lenovo USB Ethernet. On the Advance tab, you set the Speed&Duplex to 1.0 Gbps full Duplex. Then, the dock cannot access the Internet.

Solution

Set the Lenovo USB Ethernet speed and duplex to the Auto Negotiation mode, which is the default setting.

Win7/Win8: Can't remain notebook LCD only setting after restart/sleep/hibernate

Symptom

Setup the display mode as mirror mode or external mode, then change the display mode to local LCD only and the change successes. Then make system enter sleep/hibernation or restart system, after resume from sleep/hibernation/restart, the display mode jump back to mirror mode or extend mode after resume and restart.

Win8/Win7: External monitor may show abnormal screen during executing rotation setting, will display normally in a few seconds (according to system configuration).

Symptom

Attach monitor to product display port, and perform screen rotation in product GUI in system tray, the screen on the external monitor may blinking, abnormal display and so on in some few seconds after click OK, but will display normally after that.

Additional information

Abnormal display happens on the time when accessories product driver is setting the configuration. After setting is complete, the display works well.

Win7/Win8: Ctrl+Alt+ Left/Right arrow hot key was not supported

Symptom

Attach monitor to product display port, and perform external monitor rotation with hot key Ctrl + Alt + Right/Left Arrow, what the happen:

  1. Not response to the hotkey
  2. Response to the hotkey but garbage appears

Select “rotation” in product GUI in system tray, the screen on the external monitor may blinking, abnormal display and so on in some few seconds after click OK, but will display normally after that.

Pop-up message prompts to download latest driver from DisplayLink website

Symptom

Attach USB3.0 dock to system without installing driver, system prompts message to show the driver is older one, and suggest going to Display Link website to download new driver. Capture as below:

Uninstall V6.1 driver first, then install the latest driver on Lenovo website or CD.

Dock instability and detection issues with old version Renesas USB3.0 host driver

Symptom

Dock instability and detection issues may be encountered on the Huron River systems (like X1, X220, T420s, W520…), check the USB host driver version, the version is older than 2.1.32.0. To check the USB3.0 host driver, follow the path: Start menu -> Renesas Electronics -> USB3.0 Host Controller Driver -> USB3.0 Host Controller Utility. The driver should be upgraded to 2.1.32.0 if the version is a previous one.

Affected configurations

Huron River systems with Renesas USB3.0 host controller

Solution

Upgrade the host driver to later than 2.1.32.0.

Procedure:

  1. Download latest USB Host controller driver from Lenovo support website;
  2. Uninstall the old host controller driver first from Control Panel
  3. Install the new controller driver

Content protected media cannot playback through dock output

Symptom

An error message will appear when playing a content protected media; the message may be "Playback Stopped. Copy Protection Signal is detected”, or similar.

Affected configurations

All systems with HDCP (High Definition Content Protection) or COPP (Certified Output Protection Protocol)

Solution

Playback content protected media on the notebook LCD.

Additional Information

The ThinkPad USB3.0 Dock does not support HDCP (High Definition Content Protection) and COPP (Certified Output Protection Protocol) therefore Blue-ray playback and DVD playback are not supported.

Doesn't support mirror mode video playback under XP

Symptom

Attach dock to system and set whatever output on dock mirroring with notebook LCD, playback DVD movie with video player, video may not playback successfully.

Symptom

In some situations, there maybe some [ ] appear around the resolution list as below show.

This is the advanced feature of the USB3.0 dock. Modes in square brackets [ ] imply that these are modes not reported by the monitor, but the inferred modes from the preferred mode of the monitor, they are not guaranteed to work with the display.

Fail to set up display mode by Fn + F7

Symptom

The display mode configured by Fn+F7 is not supported by USB3.0 dock. If users press Fn+F7 to set up display mode, may result in unexpected display mode.

Fail to set up display mode by Win + P under Windows 7

Symptom

Display mode may not be setup successfully when use Win+P hotkey under Win 7.

Use USB3.0 GUI to setup the display mode and configuration To setup monitor layout and display mode by GUI or Window display property Procedure:

  1. Click the ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock icon in the Windows notification area. A pop-up menu opens.
  2. Select ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock, and then select the video output mode as you want.
Additional Information

Win+P hot key doesn't support the monitor number more than 2x scenario. Dock supports 2x monitors, with Notebook local LCD, there are totally 3x monitors display

Video playback window on the external monitor may freeze, or lag if web browser Hardware Acceleration is enabled

Symptom

Playback video with web browser, and drag the playback window to external monitor through USB3.0 dock, the playback window on the external monitor may freeze, or lag.
