802.11n wireless mode is disabled on ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Type 34xx) and ThinkPad Helix with Microsoft Windows 8

 

Symptom

The 802.11n wireless mode is disabled on ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Type 34xx) and ThinkPad Helix with Microsoft Windows 8, therefore, the wireless card will not connect to 802.11n access points in 11n mode.  Connecting to an access point that does not support 11n is not affected.

 

Affected Configurations

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

  • ThinkPad

Affected systems:

  • X1 Carbon (Type 34xx)
  • Helix
  • X1 Helix
  • X1 Helix 3G

System is configured with:

  • Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205S

Operating Systems

  • Microsoft Windows 8

Limitations

Users are able to configure and use Wi-Fi.  However, the performance will be limited to 11a or 11g mode depending on the access point setting.

 

Solution

The user should enable the 802.11n wireless mode from Device Manager as shown below.
