FAQs
Q1. Which ThinkPad notebook PC models are affected by the recall?
Answer: Customers who bought a ThinkPad or optional or replacement battery between October 2010 and April 2011 may have a battery subject to the recall. Below is a list of systems these batteries may have shipped with.
  • Edge 11, Edge 13, Edge 14 Series
  • T410, T420, T510, W510 Series
  • X100e, X120e, X200, X201, X201s Series
Q2. How can I find out if my battery is being recalled?
Answer: Lenovo has developed an Automated Solution to determine if your battery is being recalled. Go to www.lenovo.com/batteryprogram2014 and run the Automated Solution (Lenovo 2014 Battery Recall Utility). The utility will read your specific battery serial barcode and verify if it is being recalled. Not all batteries in the affected system list or in the affected battery part number list are being recalled. The term "affected" is used to identify which batteries should be checked with the Lenovo 2014 Battery Recall Utility to determine if the battery is being recalled.

Q3. If my battery is recalled, how much will the replacement cost?
Answer: Lenovo is replacing the recalled batteries free of charge.

Q4. Do I have to return my defective battery?
Answer: No. However, by accepting a replacement battery you are committing to recycling your battery in an approved manner.

Q5. If my battery is recalled, how long will I have to wait for it?
Answer: Orders will typically be processed and shipped within 3 business days. Delivery times will vary based on country.

Q6. If my battery has been recalled, may I continue using my system while I’m waiting for my replacement battery?
Answer: If your battery has been recalled, to continue using your ThinkPad notebook PC safely,
  1. Turn off the system
  2. Remove the battery
  3. Power your system with an AC adapter

Q7. Is it safe to use a third-party battery in my system?
Answer: The safety of so-called “gray market” batteries is unknown, and we’ve had incidents involving these types of batteries. We encourage customers to use only batteries from either Lenovo, or authorized resellers, in our products.

Q8. Is it safe to use a ThinkPad on a plane?
Answer: We will leave the issue of airline safety to the airlines. If your battery is affected by our recall, whether you are on an airplane or not, Lenovo recommends you remove the battery and power your ThinkPad notebook with an AC adapter.

Q9. What led you to do a recall?
Answer: There have been a small number of incidents that came to our attention. Our number one priority is public safety and we concluded that a recall was appropriate in this case.

Q10. Does the replacement battery have a warranty?
Answer: The replacement battery has a 90 day limited warranty. To register a claim, send an email to battery@lenovo.com with the original order confirmation number, the replacement battery 22 digit barcode and a description of the failure.

Q11. What should I do if I have a large install base and need to see if it is affected by the recall?
Answer: If you have a large install base you may choose to run our Large Enterprise Tool. To access the Large Enterprise Tool please use the following link: http://www.lenovoengineering.com/batteryprogram2014/batteryutility.zip
Once the tool has run on your system please send the .csv file to your sales rep so they can open a case file for your company. If you have questions please send those questions to battery@lenovo.com
