Symptom

After completing a Factory Restore using a CD/DVD, the system does not enter the Rescue and Recovery workspace after the F11 or blue button is pressed during the boot cycle on a computer using Windows Vista.

When Windows Vista Rescue and Recovery is upgraded, it disables the Rescue and Recovery in the Factory Restore from installing during a Factory Restore process to prevent version conflicts. Consequently, the PE area is not created.

Solution

If you encounter this issue, manually reinstall Rescue and Recovery.

Symptom

The Rescue and Recovery workspace link to the simplified interface is missing after a Factory Restore operation using a CD/DVD.

This problem is caused when you upgrade preloaded Rescue and Recovery 3.1 to a newer version, and then create a set of Product Recovery Discs. There are components in the preload which break the Advanced menu items.

Solution

If you encounter this issue, complete the following procedures:

  1. Get Factory Recovery Discs from the Lenovo Help Center.
  2. Upgrade to a newer version of Rescue and Recovery than the one used when creating the Product Recovery Discs.

Symptom

When booting to the Rescue and Recovery workspace on a Windows Vista system, the utility that prompts for a BitLocker key to unlock an encrypted volume does not display a USB hard disk drive as a target for that key.

When setting up BitLocker on a Windows Vista system, you are prompted to save the key to a USB device. This enables you to use either a USB flash drive or a USB hard disk drive as the target for that key. When booting to the Rescue and Recovery workspace, you must supply the BitLocker key to access the encrypted volume. However, only attached USB flash drives are available as locations from which to read the key. Attached USB hard disk drives are not available as an option.

Solution

Manually enter the BitLocker password, if available. If the text password is not available, perform the following steps to retrieve it:

  1. Click Cancel to close the window prompting for your BitLocker password. A message displays about the availability of some functions within the Rescue and Recovery workspace if the BitLocker password is not supplied.
  2. Click OK. The Rescue and Recovery workspace opens.
  3. Launch the Opera Web browser.
  4. Navigate to the attached USB hard disk drive and open the password.txt file.
  5. Write down the password inside the file.
  6. Reboot the system to the Rescue and Recovery workspace and enter the password when prompted to unlock a BitLocker encrypted volume.

Symptom

A Windows Vista: "R2R.exe stopped working" error is displayed during backup.

This error is displayed when R2R.exe is closing, but does NOT prevent Rescue and Recovery from capturing data. This error only occurs after updating MSXML4 using Windows update, and Microsoft will release a fix for this (KB941833).

Solution

If you encounter this issue, run Windows Update to get the latest MSXML4 update (KB941833).

Symptom

On Lenovo 3000 computers, the local RRBackups folder is not deleted after uninstalling Rescue and Recovery 4.0, 4.1, or 4.2.

When uninstalling Rescue and Recovery 4.0, 4.1, or 4.2 on a Lenovo 3000 computer, Rescue and Recovery backups stored on a local hard disk drive are not deleted. These backups can take up unnecessary space on the hard disk drive. Because Rescue and Recovery is no longer installed on the system, the backups can be deleted manually.

Solution

Delete the RRBackups folder from the local hard disk drive (for example, C:\RRBackups). To see this folder in Windows Explorer, you might have to change the folder settings. To change these setting from Windows Explorer, perform the following steps:

  1. Click Tools menu and choose Folder Options. The Folder Options window opens.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. Ensure that the Show hidden files and folders option is selected under Hidden files and folders and ensure that the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) option is NOT selected.
  4. Click Apply and then click OK to close the Folder Options window.

You should not be able to view and delete the RRBackups folder In Windows Explorer. After you delete the RRBackups folder, you should change your folder settings back to the original configuration.

Symptom

Rescue and Recovery 4.2 cannot be installed on a computer that has second hard disk drive with the Rescue and Recovery workspace.

When trying to install Rescue and Recovery 4.2 on some computers with two hard disk drives where the second hard disk has the Rescue and Recovery workspace already on it, an error message stating "There is not enough free space on the computer to install or upgrade the Rescue and Recovery environment" is displayed. The installation process fails and prompts the user to exit.

Solution

Remove the second hard disk drive, restart the computer, and install Rescue and Recovery on the first hard disk drive.

Symptom

Error occurs when you try to restore files from the System Volume Information folder to their original location in the Rescue and Recovery advanced interface.

Solution

Symptom

A restore operation to an empty hard disk drive on certain hard disk drive and system configuration might fail.

Performing a restore operation from a USB or second hard disk drive to a completely empty internal hard disk drive that is in Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) mode results in a blinking cursor, an error message stating "Operating system not found," or a Windows operating system stop error that displays on a blue screen.

Solution

To recover from this error, perform the following steps:

  1. Restart the computer and press the F1 key to enter BIOS setup.
  2. Change the Serial ATA (SATA) setting from AHCI or Enhanced mode to Compatibility mode.
  3. Perform the restore operation again.
  4. When the restore operation has completed, repeat steps 1 and 2, changing the SATA setting back to AHCI or Enhanced mode.

Symptom

Starting the computer and pressing the ThinkVantage, LenovoCare, or F11 button results in the error message "BOOTMGR is missing, Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart."

In order to avoid upgrade incompatibilities, Rescue and Recovery disables the install modules used in a Factory Restore operating during the Rescue and Recovery upgrade process. If the computer is shipped with Windows Vista installed, and the user upgrades Rescue and Recovery, creates recovery discs for Factory Restore, and then restores from those recovery discs, an error message is displayed stating "BOOTMGR is missing, Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart."

Solution

Performing one of the following will result in a working Rescue and Recovery workspace:

  • Install the latest version of Rescue and Recovery.
  • Create recovery discs before upgrading Rescue and Recovery.
