Lenovo Diagnostics - Bootable USB is a diagnostic tool that can be booted itself and tests the memory and hard drives in Lenovo ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, ThinkStation and ThinkServer.

Note: The USB diagnostic tool has to be created on a Linux system first, and only then it can be used on a Lenovo computer regardless of what Operating System the system has once it is created.

Note: It must be created on a Linux Operating System below:

  • RedHat Enterprise Linux Workstation 6.x

Downloading the installation file
  1. Click the file links to download the files from the Web page.
  2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded files.
Installing the file

Please use a Linux system to prepare the bootable usb key.

  1. Prior to Install the application
    The following packages must be installed your System prior to Generate the Bootable application.
    All this packages are provided by your Linux provider. For example RHEL or Suse website
    1. Dialog Package
    2. Lsscsi Package
    3. Syslinux Package
  2. Installing and Running Linux Bootable at a Linux Computer (RHEL as Suse)
    unzip linux-***.tar.gz ("path" is where the package is)
    cp "path"/linux-bootable-usb-12.tar.gz /tmp/
    cd /tmp
    tar -zxf linux-bootable-usb-12.tar.gz
  3. Log on console as root:
    sudo su (Ubuntu)
    su- (Redhat/Suse)
  4. Plug the USB key on machine
    Execute bootable script:
    cd /tmp/bootable
    chmod 755 CreateBootable.sh
    ./CreateBootable.sh

If no dependency is found, then the user is prompted to install them.

Next step is to choose which device to create the bootable Linux from the menu.
Please choose the USB key you plugged in to create bootable linux.

A confirmation will be asked if you really like to format the USB key.
*Notice, all data will be lost if the USB key is formatted.

Then, the creation process will be started. Do not remove the USB key during this process.
They system will finally show successful information and ask to press any key.

Continue to press any key and then you can remove the USB key from the machine.

Finally, Please boot the system with the USB key to start diagnostics.

Limitations
  • SATA Controller Mode needs to be set to AHCI in system BIOS if the system doesn't use UEFI BIOS
