Ultrabay device in the Ultrabase or the eSATA Port in the Mini Dock is not recognized – ThinkPad X230, X230 Tablet

Symptom

The Ultrabay device in the Ultrabase or the eSATA Port in the Mini Dock is not recognized when the Ultrabay (HDD/Optical) or the eSATA Port is disabled in the ThinkPad Setup menu.

Affected Configurations

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

  • ThinkPad

Affected systems:

  • X230
  • X230i
  • X230 Tablet
  • X230i Tablet

System is configured with:

  • Ultrabase or Mini Dock

Operating Systems

  • All Operating Systems

Limitations

This is the design of the hardware to share one SATA line with the Ultrabay in the Ultrabase and the eSATA Port in the Mini Dock. Disabling the Ultrabay (HDD/Optical) or the eSATA Port option in the ThinkPad Setup menu disables the SATA line and then the Ultrabase Ultrabay device and the Mini Dock eSATA Port will not be recognized.

Solution

To use the Ultrabase Ultrabay device or the Mini Dock eSATA Port, both the Ultrabay (HDD/Optical) and the eSATA Port should be enabled in the ThinkPad Setup menu as instructed below.

  1. Turn on the system.
  2. While the message, "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter", is displayed at the lower-left area or the lower-center of the screen, press the F1 key. The ThinkPad Setup menu will be displayed.
  3. Select Security.
  4. Select I/O Port access.
  5. Make sure both the Ultrabay (HDD/Optical) and the eSATA Port are set to Enabled.
  6. Save the change and start the system normally.
