How to check for viruses with Symantec Antivirus
Your computer comes with Symantec AntiVirus software which can be used to detect and eliminate viruses.

To use Symantec AntiVirus to scan for viruses:

  1. Click Start, select All Programs, select Symantec Client Security, then click Symantec AntiVirus.
  2. Click Scan, click Custom Scan, then click the drive that you want to scan.

Notes:

  • Custom Scan enables you to define specific drives, folders, and files that you want to scan. After you define the item, click Options to select the options to use for the scan, and then click OK, then click Scan.
  • You can schedule Symantec AntiVirus to scan your computer regularly. You can also customize the way Symantec AntiVirus scans for and handles viruses.

How to use Symantec Client Firewall
To protect against computer Internet security threats, unauthorized access, intrusions, attacks, privacy and identity theft, pop-up adds, use firewall software. Your computer comes with Symantec Client Firewall software which can be used to detect and eliminate Internet threats and attacks.

To use Symantec Client Firewall:

  1. Click Start, select All Programs, select Symantec Client Security, then click Symantec Client Firewall.
  2. Click Status & Settings to Turn On/Off the listed features.
  3. Click Configure to customize each feature.

How to keep your virus and firewall software up to date
It is very important to keep your virus protection, firewall rules, and intrusion detection signatures up to date. With an Internet connection, Symantec Client Security can automatically use the LiveUpdate application to access the Internet and the Symantec Client Security Web site. LiveUpdate compares your current virus list with the latest virus list available on the Web site. If a newer virus list is available, LiveUpdate will download it and Symantec AntiVirus will use the new list during the next system scan. LiveUpdate also searches for updates to your installed products and components, such as firewall rules and intrusion detection signatures.

To enable LiveUpdate to automatically check for updates:

  1. Click Start, select All Programs, select Symantec Client Security, then click Symantec AntiVirus.
  2. Click File.
  3. Click Schedule Updates.
  4. Click the Enable scheduled automatic update checkbox, then click Schedule to select how often and when you want the definition update to occur.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click OK.

Note: By using LiveUpdate, you can update the virus definitions, firewall rules, and intrusion detection signatures free of charge for 90 days. After that period ends, you can subscribe to the updates for a fee. For details, refer to the instructions that appear on the screen when you start LiveUpdate or click View, click License, then click Symantec licensing Website.
