Windows memory usage is high while ExpressCache service is running

Symptom

The user will experience that the Windows memory usage is high while ExpressCache service is running.  For example, the available memory is less than 50 percent on the system with 4GB system memory.

Affected Configurations

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

  • ThinkPad

Affected Systems (machine types, model types):

  • All

System is configure with:

  • mSATA SSD device

  • ExpressCache software

Applies to
  • Microsoft Windows 7 64bit

  • Microsoft Windows 8 64bit

Solution

The user can stop ExpressCache service from Task Manager.  This is not recommended.

Additional Information.

This is by design.  ExpressCache is a tiered caching solution which will utilize DRAM, when it is available, up to a maximum of 1.5GB.  Once the system requires additional memory for other tasks, the memory that ExpressCache is utilizing will be returned to the system pool for reallocation.  This is a function of ExpressCache, which is occurring in the background via “InvisiTasking”, an embedded technology within ExpressCache.

As a tiered caching solution, the user is going to see a performance advantage.  This is because, instead of the data residing on an SSD or HDD, the data will be residing in the fastest area of the system which is the system’s DRAM.
