Considerations to deploy Intel Rapid Start Technology

Symptom

ThinkPads, with a Solid State Drive (SSD), include Intel Rapid Start Technology enabled within the Lenovo factory preload image.  If a custom image is deployed, some manual steps are needed to enable Intel Rapid Start Technology.

Affected configuration

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

  • T430, T430i, T430s, T430si, T530, T530i
  • W530
  • X230, X230i, X230 Tablet, X230i Tablet
  • L430, L530
  • Edge E330, E430, E530, S430

The system is configured with:

  • A Solid State Drive (SSD)

Applies to
  • Microsoft Windows 7

Additional Information

Power Manager refers to Intel Rapid Start Technology as "30 Day Standby".  The "30 Day Standby" uses a special Hibernation partition on the SSD to capture the contents of system memory.

The benefit is a longer battery life (compared to standard Sleep mode) and shorter resume time (compared to standard Hibernate mode).

To enable "30 Day Standby", the user will need to create a special Hibernation partition on the SSD and also to install Power Manager.

Solutions

To create the special Hibernation partition on the SSD:

-    The Hibernation partition must be at least the size as the installed memory (RAM).  For example, if the system has 8GB of RAM, then the Hibernation partition must be at least 8GB.

-    The Hibernation partition must be created with ID=0x84 (on a MBR disk) or ID=D3BFE2DE-3DAF-11DF-BA40-E3A556D89593 (on a GPT disk).  This ID must be specified during partition creation using DISKPART.

To install Power Manager:

Download and install Power Manager 6.32 or later at the following URL:

        http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-70601

When the Hibernation partition exists, Power Manager and ThinkPad BIOS will work together to automatically transition the system from standard Sleep mode to a low-power deep Sleep after three hours, except in the following conditions:

   - when the AC adapter is attached
   - when some device is attached to the always-on USB port and charging
   - when "30 Day Standby" is disabled in Power Manager (Advanced Mode -> Global Power Settings)

The three-hour transition time is not configurable.
