Wake-On-Lan (WOL) does not work with the ME Power Package set to 1, 2, or 4 - ThinkCentre M58, M58p
Symptom

Wake-On-Lan (WOL) does not work with the ME Power Package set to 1, 2, or 4.

Affected configurations

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

  • ThinkCentre M58, M58p
Solution

Do not replace any hardware.

  • Download the update tool fw5.2.50.1039.exe from the support website.
  • Run fw5.2.50.1039.exe in Windows. In Vista, if the "User Account Control" window appears, please select "Allow". The update will take several minutes to complete.
  • After the update is complete, turn the system off and disconnect the power cord for at least 15 seconds.

Workaround

Do not replace any hardware.

The Intel Management Engine (ME) controls the Ethernet function. With the ME Power Policy set to Power Package 1, 2, or 4, the ME will be set to an inactive status when the system is in S4 (Hibernate/Sleep)or S5 (OFF) modes, so the ME can not react to an Ethernet WOL request

Change the ME Power Policy setting to Power Package 3 or 5 to correct this issue.

There are several ways to change it:

  • Through the MEBX (Management Engine BIOS Extensions)
  • Through the WebUI (Web User Interface)
  • Through a provisioning server

Note: the system Intel Management Engine (ME) supports the following:

Power Package 1 Supported (Desktop: ON in S0)
Power Package 2 Supported (Desktop: ON in S0, S3)
Power Package 3 Supported (Desktop: ON in S0, S3, and S4-5)
Power Package 4 Supported (Desktop: ON in S0, ME WoL in S3)
Power Package 5 Supported (Desktop: ON in S0, ME WoL in S3, S4-5)
Power Package 6 Supported (Desktop: ON in S0, S3, S4-5, OFF After Power Loss)
Power Package 7 Supported (Desktop: ON in S0, ME WoL in S3, S4-5, OFF After Power Loss)
