STATEMENT DESCRIPTION:

The following is a list of FAQs related to upgrading to Windows 7 on models 2958-A5U and 2958-A4U of Lenovo 3000 G550 system.

SOLUTION:

Question 1:

When I use the Win7 upgrade disk that came with my computer, the upgrade won't accept the Certificate of Authenticity key and the upgrade fails to complete.

Answer:

In most instances, this failure is caused by trying to run the Win7 install from within Windows XP. In order for the Win7 upgrade to run correctly the system must be booted from the Win7 disk.

Follow the steps below to boot from the Win7 disk and correctly install the Win7 operating system.

Correct Windows 7 Upgrade Procedure:

1. Power off system

2. Insert Windows 7 disk in the DVD drive

3. Power on system and press F12 to access the boot order menu

4. Select the option to start from the DVD / Optical drive

5. Follow the on screen directions as Windows 7 installs

6. Remove the DVD at the end of the process and reboot to Windows 7

Question 2:

I have upgraded the Operating System, but now I don't have any of the original applications that came with my system.

Answer:

Upgrading from Windows XP to Win7 requires a "clean install". This means that the original contents of the hard drive has to be removed before Win7 can be installed. Win7 versions of the applications can be downloaded from http://support.lenovo.com.

Question 3:

I have upgraded the Operating System to Win7 but now my touchpad isn't working correctly.

Answer:

Win7 has native drivers that will fully support most of the hardware on the Lenovo 3000 G550 systems. The native Win7 pointing device driver however does not fully support all of the functionality of the Alps touchpad. Full functionality can be restored by downloading and installing the Win7 Alps pointing Device Driver from http://support.lenovo.com.

Question 4:

I have upgraded the Operating System to Win7, but now my Power Management isn't working correctly.

Answer:

Win7 has native drivers that will fully support most of the hardware on Lenovo G550 systems. The native Win7 power management device driver however does not fully support all of the functionality of the Lenovo Energy Management system. Full functionality can be restored by downloading and installing the Win7 Lenovo Energy Management Device Driver from http://support.lenovo.com.

Question 5:

My old Windows XP applications won't run in Windows 7

Answer:

If you are having problems running third party applications in Win7 you should check the application for Win7 compatibility or consult the applications authors for assistance with Win7 configuration. Applications that were not specifically designed to run in Win7 may not function correctly after upgrading to Win7.

Question 6:

I can't download the drivers and applications. Is there any other way I can get the Win7 drivers and applications?

Answer:

At the present time, drivers and applications are only available via download at the Lenovo support web site. There are plans to make the drivers and applications available on disk but the disks will not be available before early January 2010. Machines manufactured after early January will include all the Win 7 drivers and applications.

Question 7:

The Lenovo support web site has 32 bit and 64 bit versions of the drivers. How do I know which versions to download?

Answer:

You can determine if you have a 32bit or a 64bit operating system by following the steps below:

1. Click "Start"

2. Right click on "Computer"

3. Select "Properties"

4. When the window opens the heading "System Type" will display either 32 or 64 bit operating system
