How to work with the Q and S partitions on ThinkPads - ThinkPad X200, X200 Tablet, X301, R400, R500, SL300, SL400, SL500, T400, T500, W500, W700.

Symptom

On newer ThinkPads preloaded with Windows Vista, the Q and S partitions are used for system recovery. These partitions show up with drive letters in My Computer. Some users may want or need to hide these partitions so they are not displayed, others may want to assign different drive letters to the partitions. If the machine is reloaded from Recovery DVD or the Service Partition, then the procedure must be followed again, as the recovery will restore the partitions to a visible state.

Affected configurations

The following ThinkPad systems running Microsoft Windows Vista:

  • ThinkPad R400, R500
  • ThinkPad SL300, SL400, SL500
  • ThinkPad T400, T500
  • ThinkPad W500, W700, W700ds.
  • ThinkPad X200, X200 Tablet, X301,
Solution

NOTE: Prior to running this process, look for two hidden files on the Q: and S: drives. Look in the root directory of the Q: Drive for LenovoQDrive.exe and then look in the root directory of the S: Drive for LenovoSDrive.exe.

Procedure to check for the required hidden files:

  1. Open a command prompt via All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
  2. Type q: [enter] at the prompt
  3. Type dir /ah [enter]
  4. Look for a file called LenovoQDrive.exe
  5. Type s: [enter]
  6. Type dir /ah [enter]
  7. Look for a file called LenovoSDrive.exe
  8. Type exit [enter] to exit the command prompt

Note: If those two files are missing then they will need to be copied to their respective drives prior to performing the steps below. If the files are present, then skip ahead to the section entitled Hide Drives and continue.

Procedure to copy the required files to the Q and S drives.

  1. Download LenovoQdrive.exe and LenovoSdrive.exe to the desktop.
  2. Open My Computer
  3. Copy LenovoQdrive.exe to the Q drive.
  4. Copy LenovoSdrive.exe to the S Drive.
  5. Open the Q drive and right click the LenovoQdrive.exe file and click properties.
  6. In the attributes pane at the bottom of the pane, put checks in the Read-only and Hidden boxes. Click ok.
  7. Open the S drive and right click the LenovoSdrive.exe and click properties.
  8. In the attributes pane at the bottom of the pane, put checks in the Read-only and Hidden boxes. Click ok.
  9. Delete the two files from the desktop.
  10. Once these steps have been completed return to the section entitled Hide Drives and continue the process as outlined.

Hide Drives

Note: Running these programs may cause a prompt from the User Account Control window. If prompted to confirm, click Continue and the drive will be hidden, if the drive is the default S drive or Q drive. If you have already changed the drive letter, volume label or deleted the default programs from the drive (LenovoSDrive.exe or LenovoQDrive.exe) it will not do anything. The drive should disappear from My Computer in about 30 seconds.

Change Drive Letters of the newly hidden drives.

To change the letter of the S drive, follow these steps:

First, clear the registry mount points.

  1. Run the Lenovo_Hide_Drive_S.exe Now unhide and assign a new drive letter.
  2. Open an Administrator CMD Prompt In Windows Vista: Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Run diskpart.exe
  4. Run diskpart command List disk
  5. Select your disk number that has the C drive on it ( look in Disk Management if you have multiple disks to see which one contains your C partition)
  6. Run diskpart command Sel disk 0
  7. Run diskpart command List par
  8. Run diskpart command Select partition 1
  9. Run diskpart command Set id=07 override
  10. Run diskpart command Assign letter=R (if you want R you can pick any unused letter here)
  11. Run diskpart command Exit
  12. The new drive will now show up in My Computer. Example: If in step 9 you rename the partition to drive Z:, you will now see a new drive in My Computer called SERVICEV003 (Z:)

To change the letter of the Q drive, follow these steps:

  1. Run the Disk Management (from the Start Menu, right click "computer", click "manage", and click "disk management"))
  2. Right click on the Q Drive and select Change Drive Letter and Paths
  3. Click on Change
  4. Select the letter you would like to assign
  5. Select OK
  6. You may need to reboot if prompted.
